Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Impressions

drakesfortune.jpg

Based on the footage of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune that I've gotten to view, it looks like Naughty Dog is once again putting together a pretty high-quality 3rd person shooter for the PS3... even though the art style is a pretty radical departure from the other titles they've put out. The story seems straight out of a pulp-adventure article, featuring a jungle island and long lost treasure with a liberal dose of absurdly macho action thrown into the mix, and the gameplay honestly looks pretty polished based on the video footage they threw up over at Kotaku.

Aside from the admittedly very pretty graphics, the enemy A.I. looks like it'll provide a pretty good challenge for players because the enemies don't seem to rely on static tactics when battling the players. The videos show them moving all over the map, flanking the character, and generally being a giant pain in the ass. They don't sit still or run back and forth over the same patch of ground over and over again, and they also look like they're speedy little buggers who're more than a little difficult to actually hit.

However, despite the fact that Crecente has endorsed the game, I find myself a little wary based on the available footage: sure, it looks lovely, but I'm not really noticing anything truly innovate in terms of game play or style. Of course, this is all going off of 3 minutes of footage that's been really compressed so it streams over the net nicely. I'll save final judgments for when I get chance to actually sit down with the game and play it for myself. Until then, let's go with this: it looks promising and fun, but I'm not sure if it'll be truly great.

Not every game has to be "innovative." Twilight Princess basically did not innovate at all, but it was tons of fun nonetheless. (Once you get out of the prologue, anyway. Nintendo's pretty bad anymore at engaging you from the very start of a game.)

This game looks great! Is it innovating? No, but it looks fantastic anyway.
