Yet Another Idiotic Piece Of NY Video Game Legislation

Dear Taxpayers of New York,
Don't panic. This is for your own good. Really. Okay, we may also be trying to look tough on juvenile crime by going after a popular scapegoat with a piece of legislation that will most likely get fought against and overturned by the E.S.A. at the cost of several hundred thousand of your dollars. Also, we like looking like a bunch of political badasses, even though we're anything but.
Of course, last week's legislation was backed by the Republicans, which means it's far inferior to our bill because everything we Democrats touch turns to gold. So, let's go over what our proposed piece of legislation will accomplish:
1.) selling or renting to a minor a game which includes “depraved violence and indecent images” would be a class E felony under the state penal code“Depraved” violence is defined in the bill as “rape, dismemberment, physical torture, mutilation or evisceration of a human being.”
2.) every new video game console sold in New York State would be required to contain built-in parental control technology, or, as the language in the bill puts it:
…a mechanism, device or control system that allows an owner, through the use of a personal identification number, password or similar technology, to prevent the display of video games, or portions thereof containing certain content…
Of course, never mind the fact that every console on the market already has built in parental controls in the form of password protection. Despite all appearances to the contrary, we know what we're doing. Really.
Sincerely,
The New York State Department of Condescending Paternalism

Is a violent video game something to take away someone's right to vote for?
Personally, I'm not seeing the big deal here. Whenever stupid people complain about the fact that violent video games are bad for kids, gamers tend to reply: "Well these games are not for children. It's clearly rated 'mature'". So why get so upset over a law that stops children from buying adult video games. Kids can't buy porn, they can't watch "R" movies in theaters, so why should they be allowed to buy mature Video games?
If I was selling video games, and some 12 year old wanted to buy GTA3, I wouldn't sell it to him, law or not. It's not a kids game!
The rating system is there for a reason. Many parents are too dumb, or too ignorant of modern technology to bother reading or paying attention to the rating system, therefore it's law now.
Kids not buying adult games. Someone please explain the issue here?
trust me, the parents are fully aware of the ratings, and they for the most part, don't give to shits how inapprpriate it is for the kids. at least the vast majority of customers that come into the store i work in. often arguing that, "my kids won't listen to or play anything that doesn't have a parental advisory label on them". i would think that this is actually something is protecting the businesses. i'm all for it, i like laws that make parents get involved in what their kids do.
