City of Heroes Holds Rainbow Prom

Pride celebrations are starting their festivities all over the country this month. New York, SF, LA, Atlanta and even Paragon City! If you are unfamiliar with Paragon City, it is the fictional metropolis that houses NCSoft's superhero MMO, City of Heroes. CoH and it's counterpart, City of Villians, has managed to get it self quite the reputation as the gay friendliest MMO on the block. At the time when I was playing, I was the member of one of many gay superhero groups, namely Rainbow Alpha Force. I can tell you from experience that playing a game with a bunch of gay boys really is a completely different experience than playing with a bunch of straight boys. Anyone who tells you different has no idea what they are talking about.
On Sunday, June 10th, The Paragon City Rainbow Prom was held on the Victory server at the city's hottest and most elite nightspot, Pocket D. The room was filled to capacity, a testament to the sheer amount of gay and gay friendly players roaming the streets of that fair city. There were costumed heroes and villains, celebrity impersonators and even some of the bigwigs of CoH lore showed up to join in the fun. Prizes were given away for Best Overall Costume, Hottest Couple, Most Bizarre and Best Villain. The well over three hour event marked a new era for LGBT events in CoH/CoV as the party was the highest attended LGBT event in the game's history, populated not only by players, but attended and supported by NCSoft employees themselves.
It's great to see gay and lesbian players taking things into their own hands and making things like this happen. Visual and vocal presence is important for gay gamers, especially in an online MMO situation where homophobic rhetoric seems to be tossed about left and right. Now we just need a Ye Olde Pride Party in World of Warcraft sponsored by Skyy vodka and featuring go-go dancing Blood Elves and the circle will be complete. Yeah, that's right, you show those Orcs who's flying the rainbow flag now...
