Diablo III a Definite Maybe

To all the Diablo fans who were a little sad that the big announcement at the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational was StarCraft II and not Diablo III, there is hope. Why? Because Blizzard doesn't have a habit of making new IPs and the folks at StarCraftTwo.com put together a big list of why Diablo III should be coming soon. Here are a few of their reasons in a nutshell:
- Job openings listed in the last three years specifically for the "Diablo Team."
- In 2005, GamesIndustry.biz wrote a story on Blizzard North's move to the Irvine office, where they would "continue working on an unannounced project, widely believed to be a new game in the hugely popular Diablo franchise."
- In October 2006, the article author interviewed Diablo: The Sin War author Richard A. Knaak, who claimed, "I ain’t writing for a dead game."
- The Diablo II splash page the week before the Worldwide Invitational had Deckard Cain saying, “Stay awhile and listen!”
StarCraftTwo.com also goes on to talk about rumors and speculations about the Diablo movie and what Diablo III might be like. At the end, the writer makes a good point: A new MMORPG from Blizzard would be competing against it's own enormously successful World of Warcraft. However, having two of your own MMORPGs on the market is better than the alternative:
All those fans leaving World of Warcraft in the past two years, have moved on to new MMOs such as Warhammer Online and Lord of the Rings’ Middle Earth. With Diablo going MMORPG, those former World of Warcraft fans would return, and leaving customers of World of Warcraft would remain within Blizzard’s pockets. Again … the best competitor in the MMO market is yourself.
All I know is, this Panda is getting herself to Blizzcon this year. Until then, I'll be watching this over and over again...
