GameTap Coming To Mac On June 28, 2007

GameTap is coming to the Intel Mac.

By now, everyone should know about GameTap. However, whether or not everyone actually plays with or on GameTap is a different story. Still, GameTap is working hard to broaden its audience and its next step towards doing that is moving to other platforms. That platform, ladies and germs, is the Intel Mac.

Macworld notes thatGameTap recently brought Myst Online: Uru Live to the Macintosh using Cider, a program that helps games made for PC run on Macs with Intel technology. Cider will now be used to bring GameTap for Mac to Mac gaming enthusiasts and casual users alike on June 28th. Unfortunately for those of you who own older Macs sans Intel chip, you will not be able to take part as Cider works only on Intel Macs. Fortunately, I've got a MacBook Pro and this might actually come in handy if I feel the need for some heavy gaming on the go (the free service has opened me up to trying it out)...when I don't feel like playing my DS or something.

Even so, owners of newer Macs will now have hundreds of games to choose from and this could be a significant step towards making the Mac a serious platform for gaming. You'll remember that EA recently announced its support for the platform and that id Software is developing a 'top secret' engine on the Mac, as well. Is this a sure sign of Mac gaining entry to the gaming world? Could it give PCs a run for their money among gamers seeking something different? That all remains to be seen. This is, however, a good step for Mac and Mac gamers everywhere.

Make that only Intel based X86 macs.
"Cider only works on Intel Macs, but Sanchez said that otherwise it wouldn’t have been possible to develop a Mac version of GameTap."

The Cider software is based on the Intel chips and Power PC mac owners like me are left out in the cold. At least my Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii still love me and they are both run on Power PC chips.

"is this a sure sign of Mac gaining entry to the gaming world? "

Also what the hell do you mean by that? I've been playing games on my Macs since 1985 and your PCs didn't have fonts, mice and bitmap graphics that were worth a damn.

Bungie started off as a Mac only game developer. That remark make me want to go play some Marathon and Myth.

Sweet, Cider is based on Cedega, which is a fork of Wine, so this should mean it'll be possible to get Gametap going under Linux eventually.... whether official or otherwise.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
