More Toxic Game-Themed Foodstuffs

Oh, Lazy Panda, how you ignite the passionate nostalgia in my soul. And you make me giggle like a little schoolgirl, too. A villainous, power-mad schoolgirl from the future who's hell-bent on conquering the earth and ruling over the populace with a tech-enhanced iron fist, sure, but a schoolgirl nonetheless.

When you posted about how Microsoft and Kellogg's tried to poison you with those icky game-themed fruit rolls, I was reminded of one of the most bizarre breakfast trends to ever hit store shelves: the Nintendo Cereal System. Don't ask me why, the memory just popped up from somewhere in the dust-ridden shelves of my Alzheimer'-ridden mind. As you can see, the box was actually packaged with two separate bags of cereal to create the illusion of more sugar in a package no bigger than any others on grocery shelves. There were also trading cards on the back of the box, along with a sticker which I made my mom put on her back windshield. I also seem to recall the sticker "fell off" about a week later, so it probably wasn't as cool as I thought it was.

Now, from what I remember (hey, I was able to get my parents to buy it a couple of times... what can I say, I was adorable and they couldn't weren't able to deny me of tasty things), the cereal was OK but not all that amazing. As a result, it didn't sell enough to outlast the final two years of the 1980s; subsequently, there weren't any extra varieties of cereal other than Super Mario Bros (cloned from Lucky Charms) and Legend of Zelda (a poor man's Cap'n Crunch). I tried to find a box of the stuff on eBay this morning, but no luck. I guess when something edible hasn't been made for about seventeen years or so, I probably shouldn't be trying to buy it anyway...

Can I point out that the tagline of this cereal is: "If you can't beat 'em, eat 'em"?

This is advice I have been following for years, I just didn't know it was video game themed breakfast cereal that gave it to me.

I actually have two of these boxes at home, the first two they released with the trading cards on the back, maybe I should scan them sometime.

lol rictus, that hits a lil close to home :P I remember saving the boxes when I was little cause I didnt want to cut the cards out and ruin or lose them... Might have been a lil anal retentive as a child, heh. When I moved last July I found them in an old box of my stuff. Kinda odd but cool because they are surprisingly good shape. BTW I remember thinking the Zelda side tasted better but I may have just been biased towards all things Zelda.
