New Fallout 3 Details -- 'Oblivion' with Guns?

vaultboy_explosion.jpg

Where the s*** is my Game Informer? Not in my fuggin' mailbox, that's for sure. Anyway, if the newest issue hasn't made it to your house or hands somehow, you'll be just as pleased as I am to learn new facts for Fallout 3. The article reveals many details about the story (set in the year 2277 in Washington D.C.) and gameplay (you can play either first-person camera view or an over-the-shoulder third-person view, similar to Oblivion). While many Fallout staples remain (like Pip-Boy, the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system, and the lovable Vault Boy, of course), there are tons of new features, such as the V.A.T.S., the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System, which seems to keep the role-playing element in the combat system. GI says V.A.T.S. "assures that this first-person game so chock full of guns doesn't become an FPS."

So is it "Oblivion with guns"? Perhaps to some degree, but if you liked Oblivion, that shouldn't be a problem; however, if you liked the old games as they were, you might have a few things to complain about. All that matters to me is that it retains Fallout series trademarks, like the comically excessive violence and dark sense of humor (plus, I loved Oblivion anyway). The game will make it to Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in Fall 2008, provided there are no delays of course...

The worthless goblins on that website weren't going to be satisfied unless it was exactly like Fallout 2, down to the isometric perspective. Screw em. I personally think the article is very promising, and shows that the Bethesda team are fans of Fallout and are doing their best to be true to the series. I do think the mutant is too orc or Doom looking, but they have over a year to change the model, and if they don't.. eh. So what? I'm more concerned about the battle system, but again, they have a year and a half to refine it.

Let's just hope it releases simultaneously on Windows, not just XBox, and that the Windows version isn't Vista only.

I've been a fan of Fallout just as long as any of the troglodytes on the NMA website, and I think it looks awesome. They whine whine whine @#$%ing constantly.

They would prefer to let Fallout die rather than have it grow beyond their shallow and parched imaginings. They're like wasteland inhabitants themselves, angry and barren, praying for death even when rebirth is offered them.

Fallout 3 is like water into the desert, but there are some who would rather die than ever change.

I'll probably never play it because I dislike both first-person shooters AND RPGs, including Fallout 2, but I wonder why Coherent feels that offering a three-quarters perspective view in addition to the first person or over the shoulder views would have caused the game to "die" rather than "grow[ing] beyond their blah blah blah", and how not having that option makes an unreleased game "water in the desert".

I'll remind you both that this is not the first game to wildly alter its play mechanic with a sequel, and the track record for games that do that is very mixed. For every Duke Nukem 3D there's a Battlezone; for every Ocarina of Time there's a Super Mario Sunshine (my personal favorite in the series, but most people disagree with me.)

Maybe moving to a FPS-like experience will increase their sales, or maybe alienating a lot of Fallout 2 fans will kill their word of mouth and turn it into Daikatana. Sure, it may still have RPG elements, but RPG players don't automatically like shooters and vice versa. What's that saying about a barrel of wine and a cup of sewage?

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
