PSP "Slim" on the Way?

According to Kotaku's Brian Ashcraft, "several sources close to Sony" has given details on the new and improved PSP:
- Not the PSP 2, but a slimmer redesign of the original that contains the same internal hardware
- New, smaller LED screen which makes the battery life last as much as four times longer
- Faster UMD drive to speed up load times and gameplay
- 8GBs of internal flash memory
- D-pad overhaul
Details that are still up in the air:
- Built-in camera
- PSP will remain black, with either a glossy or matte finish
- The final price ("but Sony is hoping to sell it for under $170 or so")
- Release date, possibly August or September
- The name
Apparently it will be manufactured in the next few weeks and the product will be officially unveiled at E3 being held on July 11-13.
PSP owners, what say you? And non-PSP owners, would you consider buying a PSP given the new specs? I know Fruit Brute just got his, and I'm wondering if he's annoyed. I don't have one yet and I certainly would consider buying one if the price is right...
PSP Slim Details Revealed [Kotaku]

When this comes out, I'll definitely consider picking up an original PSP. I'm hoping this slim PSP will drive down the price of a used model.
A PSP with a smaller screen? I thought the whole point of the PSP was that it had a big screen for playing games and watching movies. The PSP doesn't need a redesign like the DS did, it just needs better battery.
Now I know why I got that coupon from EBGames for $50 off a 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo - they must not be carrying them anymore after the new PSP comes out. I already own a PSP, but Gamestop usually has a good trade-in deal for upgrading old hardware - I imagine it'll be about $80 to buy the new system if I trade in my old one. Since I was getting ready to spend $60 on a 4 GB memory stick, another $20 for twice the memory and faster loading times sounds reasonable.
Yeah I like the screen how it is.
I just wanted to correct your grammar in the beginning of the post.
"According to Kotaku's Brian Ashcraft, 'several sources close to Sony' has given them details on the new and improved PSP:"
Being singular, your subject, Brian Ashcraft, should have* been given details, and they should have been delivered to him*, or Kotaku*
As for the rumor itself, I think the $170. price point is basically inconceivable with all those specs. 8gb of flash memory? $200. Say hello to a $400. PSP or more giant losses for Sony.
I would definitely appreciate a smaller size, and wouldn't mind if that meant a slightly smaller screen. But what I really want to get my hands on are those fabulous Japan-only PSP accessories.
As an owner of a current model PSP, I'm pleased to hear Sony is addressing the shortcomings of its portable hardware. It demonstrates that Sony is actually listening to consumer criticism, which one would hope was the direct result of lessons learned from the whole PS3 mess.
As far as purchasing an upgraded model is concerned, I will wait for a price drop first. The excessive load times of games (Ys: The Ark of Napishtim being the most notorious) have rendered some titles virtually unplayable on the PSP.
If the new PSP is decently priced, I may be convinced to get one. There have been some recent releases that have caught my eye and FF VII: Crisis Core looks like it could be pretty good.
A smaller screen is a stupid decision. The large, brilliant screen is the most impressive part of the PSP and if they get rid of that for something more DS-like, well, I instantly become less likely to buy one than I was already.
I think by smaller screen they may mean the screens actual thickness. Like some sweet new LCD tech that allows them to make the system itself smaller.
