Saturday Morning Cartoons: Tales of Eternia

While I fancy myself a pretty hardcore RPG fan—confession time—I've never played any of the titles in the "Tales of _____" series. I hear it's a character flaw, but I don't know. So I checked out the anime, well, the anime for Tales of Eternia at least. Magic, swords, creepy guys in masks, bards, giant crayfish, summoned monsters, it's a little frantic, but there's some stuff here I think I could like. See what you think. And for all you Tales veterans, are the games worth it?

Actually yeah, they are worth it ans fun. A nice change from basic turn based RPGs. Combat is real time and fast, try it, start with Tales of symphonia and see how ya like it.

The good:

The 2D tales games were excellent. Beautiful sprites, engaging storylines and TONS of things to do in the game.

The bad:

Pretty much all the 3D games. The terrible translations NAMCO has been putting out, the bad voice acting... the list goes on... start with one of the older tales games. My suggestion... go after the one named after the very anime you posted.

I'm actually replaying this game right now on PSP (European import, plays fine and in English on US systems). But I played it 5 or 6 years ago on PS1 when it was "Tales of Destiny 2". Its really great, very lighthearted without being shallow, great battle system, good voice acting. Really lovely environments. I started up Tales of Symphonia on GC and was really dissapointed in comparison with this one. If you can find the original PS version or the PSP (whihc looks AMAZING on the PSP screen, and has NO load times), definitely go fo it. I got my PSP copy on ebay for like $20...
