Sonic RPG. From BioWare. On The DS.
It could be stranger. It could be Mario & Sonic, say, at the Olympic Games. But still, this is quite a feat: Sega partnering with BioWare to cast the busted, hungover young Drew Barrymore of the game world, AKA Sonic the Hedgehog, in his very own RPG. On the DS. It makes perfect sense.
That's about all we know at the moment, save that BioWare CEO Ray Muzyka says his company is "committed to delivering a truly amazing story-driven experience within the Sonic universe, focusing on capturing the character's broad appeal and placing him in a completely original adventure." I'm sure that's true, and yet...
Sega's pushing for "increased emphasis on Western content development for Western audiences," which is a good thing as far as I can tell. Take a page from Capcom, right? Add a little Frank West into the mix? I'm not sure that a Sonic RPG is exactly the right recipe, but hey - like I said, it could always be worse.

SEGA ANNOUNCES BIOWARE WILL CREATE SONIC ROLE PLAYING GAME FOR THE NINTENDO DS SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (June 21, 2007)—SEGA© of America, Inc., SEGA® Europe, Ltd., and Canada-based developer studio BioWare® Corp. today announced a partnership to create a new video game based on the classic SEGA flagship icon Sonic The Hedgehog. The relationship with BioWare reinforces SEGA's increased emphasis on Western content development for Western audiences. In the past few years SEGA has announced partnerships with developers Bizarre Creations, Gas Powered Games, Monolith Productions, Obsidian Entertainment, Planet Moon Studios, Pseudo Interactive and Silicon Knights. SEGA has also acquired development studios The Creative Assembly, Secret Level and Sports Interactive.

Nevermind the picture; how DARE you take Drew Barrymore's name in vain? She recovered from drugs&alcohol. Sonic is still down there in the gutter. He's Lindsay Lohan or (Gawd help us all) Tara Reid. Never make this mistake again.
On topic, Tail's Adventure on the Game Gear was actually a pretty good 2D adventure game with RPG elements to it and a worldmap. It makes much more sense with Tails than with Sonic, what with Tails being the tech genius character and not inherently about HIGH SPEED ACTION, but it shows that it can be done (and Bioware would do it much better than Sega did).
