60GB PS3 Staying Around For A Little While Longer...Apparently

Earlier today, Sony announced that it was going to pull a most epic bait and switch maneuver by removing the 60GB PlayStation 3 (which had just received a price cut) to replace it with an 80GB model without hardware PlayStation 2 emulation. Well now Sony has made an official announcement that the 60GB model will stick around for a little while. Here's what the
Sony rep had to say:
Those quotes from David Reeves are not accurate. He said that if they had lowered the price in Europe, that territory would have run out of their current inventory by the end of July... As announced this week, SCEA's product offering in North America consists of a 80GB PS3 available in August at $599 and a 60GB PS3 available now for $499. We have will have ample supplies of both models to meet the needs of our consumers for the foreseeable future.
Confused? Sony sure seems to be. Kaz Hirai says one thing, the rep says another. On top of that, Sony would not say whether or not "there would be 60Gig versions on the market this Holiday season." However, the b/f and I are still trying to decide if we should jump on the 60GB bandwagon for the hardware emulation of the PS2, but that, somehow, seems slightly less urgent than earlier today. What do you think of all this?
UPDATE: 60Gig PS3 Staying - For Now [Next Generation]

Is there really any way to have a clue what's going to happen? It's quite clear these days that Sony likes to constantly lie to the press and the consumer at large. Didn't they say, one day before it actually ended up happening, that they weren't going to cut the price on the PS3 to begin with?
I really can't say I have a clue what they're going to do. I still won't be buying one, but then I haven't bought a console since the NES, so that doesn't mean a damn thing.
^^^ jeez, crabby much?
It seems pretty clear that Sony is phasing out the 60GB model, but that there are still truckloads of them to go around. I would imagine you'll be able to find them at the lower price for months, but by Xmas it's probably going to be 80GB only.
From the three statements from Sony, I'm pretty sure they're trying to say the following, but in very vague corporate-speech:
"We are no longer making the 60GB PS3, but because the demand for our systems is so low, there will be ample supply for the next several months at least."
I bought a ps3 yesterday because I wanted real backward compatibility and Sony seems more interested in keeping a $599 pricetag than maintaining their own hardware.
I didn't hurt that I had a bunch of best buy gift cards to lower the price more, but I feel like I've bought a PS2+ since I didn't buy any ps3 games and nothing in the immediate future strikes me as being worth $60. Hopefully some PSN will make me feel better about buying this thing.
Speaking of PSN...wow! Anyone claiming that PSN even comes close to competing with Live is fooling themselves. It's slow, awkward, and [relatively] empty. I guess if I had to say something nice about it, PSN doesn't use an abstract "points" system and the demo for Nucleus was fun.
Am I the only person wary of buying a PS3 because of this info. I just get the impression that after I bought it, 6 months later, there would be another "inventory adjustment" and I'd be out $100.
Marketing ploy to get you to feel the urgency of buying a cheaper PS3 now while you still can.
Low.
