Activision And Gibson Combining Forces For Guitar Hero 3

Kind of like all the great inventions that came out of the video game world, it's hard to imagine a world without Guitar Hero. Like Katamari Damacy, it's one of those games that everyone knows about, and you can pull it out at a party and, for once, not put everyone to sleep. It's got all the nerdy qualities we enjoy: unlockables, the chance to show off, personalization. Most importantly it lets you feel like you're a part of the songs you love so much without the inner despair that is air guitar. Show the world that you too can gyrate your hips and tap your feet in public like some tweaked out Mick Jagger. How gray would life be without that?

Guitar Hero III is on it's way to nearly every major console, and now that it has the official subtitle of "Legends of Rock," Activision has announced that it's going to team up with Gibson to bring over 20 recognizable guitars to the in-game roster, as well as a new wireless controller for each system. I love the space for the Wii's remote in the Wii's version, and the PS2 version is even getting a Kramer-styled axe. This is unprecedented for any game--to offer this many options really shows how successful the franchise has been.

Some new modes have also been announced as well; "grueling boss battles" and "expanded online multiplayer modes" are just a couple. Most importantly, they're promising more original master recordings than ever, which is a huge bonus for me, since I'm kind of a stickler for originals and kind of hate covers. Nothings worse than hearing your favorite song butchered by some cocky "battle of the bands" runner-up.

Loving the guitar. However, the question is: Guitar Hero III or Rock Band? Or will I have to get both? The more I read about the games, the more I think to myself, "Yes, I think I will have to get both."
