CVG Awards Phantom Hourglass A Solid 10

The upcoming Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass had me skeptical for a little while when I found out that they were using a touch screen interface. I couldn’t imagine controlling Link with a stylus instead of a sturdy D-pad or analog stick. Well, my worries have been assuaged by the review I just read on CVG. They gave the game a perfect 10 claiming that,
“Not only is PH testament to the d-pad/analogue-trumping capacity of touch screen control - it’s also proof that Nintendo still has what it takes to create real gamers’ games.”
The review is completely spoiler free. Instead of explaining the plot of the title, the review addresses the control scheme, and how it benefits the gameplay.
Say sayonara to the d-pad, then, and embrace the technology that makes Phantom Hourglass the most enjoyable Zelda game since Ocarina of Time.
A few of the standard Zelda techniques are explained like controlling the boomerang, and swordplay. One new aspect to the gameplay is the inclusion of microphone control. In dungeons, Link can blow out some torches by blowing into the mic. Also he can blow dust off of old maps and hail certain characters by yelling “Oi!”
True to the spit and polish of first party Nintendo games, the reviewer states,
”There is no downtime between objectives in Phantom Hourglass. You can sense at all times, and in everything you see and do, that Nintendo has rigorously tested the game to ensure that the high just keeps on rolling.”
Now I can’t wait to play this new adventure. I’m glad that Nintendo is continuing to work in the Windwaker cell-shaded presentation. It gave Windwaker a magical quality and a sense of grand scale that I have not associated with a Zelda title since the first 3 console games.
