David Jaffe, God Of Indie

God of War director and designer David Jaffe (pictured, with the Ark of the Covenant or sommat) is leaving Sony to found a new independent game development studio with the promising name of Eat Sleep Play. Jaffe and Incognito founder Scott Campbell won't be straying far from the skirts of Mother Sony, however, having already signed a Sony-exclusive three game deal.
In addition to the three new games, Eat Sleep Play will release a PS2 port of the Campbell-directed PSP launch title Twisted Metal Head On. That's a bit of a salmon swimming upstream, getting ported from a handheld game (although I suppose we've got Puzzle Quest to thank for that...have there been others?), but it's a nice, rare compliment to the PSP nonetheless.
The PS2 port will run at 60fps and will sport higher-res textures as well as "alterations" to gameplay - as well as seven levels once intended for a sequel to Twisted Metal: Black. And a Twisted Metal retrospective. So there's that.
An original game is in the works also, as should be expected, unnamed and unannounced but slated for 2008 just the same. Jaffe waxed poetic about his new venture:
"Granted, our new ship is no longer the grand, unstoppable beast that is Sony. Instead, it's a smaller vessel, scrappy even, manned with a crew of experienced sailors who felt the need to venture out into the unknown seas and see what we could see. And the cool thing is, a small as our ship is, it's not the least bit scary. It's exciting as hell. It feels right; like the time is right, the crew is ready, and the grand voyage is just beginning."
Bon voyage, Senor Jaffe. And willkommen, too.
