E3 07: Dark Sector

Here we have the extremely sexy Sheldon Carter, executive producer of Dark Sector explaining to you, as he did to me, the backstory and primary game mechanics of D3Publisher of America's darkest, sector-iest action title for the Xbox 360 and PS3. As protagonist Hayden Tenno, you've been infected by a biological agent that's mutated your arm into a mottled black glaive complete with a spinning, bladed chakra-type weapon that can absorb elements like fire and electricity to both mow through enemies and solve environmental puzzles.

With a standard FPS arsenal in place alongside the "slave to the glaive" weapon/affliction, Dark Sector looks a bit like a cross between The Darkness and...well...The Darkness. (It's even getting it's own comic book.) But since I loved that game and thought it could have been longer, that's a good thing.

To be totally honest, an activity from which I seem to have difficulty refraining in the first place, I spent about half of my time with Dark Sector staring dreamily into Sheldon's liquid brown eyes. But the game looked nice, too. The elemental buffs on the weapon were retrievable from both one-shot sources (a lightbulb, for instance) and permanent sources (say, an indestructible electrical transformer) and last long enough to be useful but dissipate quickly enough to keep the clock ticking. It's been pushed back to first quarter 2008 to give Sheldon and his team at Digital Extremes time to perfect this moody monster.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
