E3 07: Nyko Party Station

nykopartystation.jpg

The people at Nyko have been friends and supporters of GayGamer since way back in the stone ages when Fruit Brute and Mikey ran the site off a large cave mural in southern France (and poor Toots practiced his needlework with catgut and a dull twig), so I was excited to see more than just standard peripheral fare at their room in the Casa Del Mar (although their workaround solution for a wireless Xbox 360 Guitar Hero II guitar was pretty nifty too).

The glorious monster you see here is a prototype of the Nyko Party Station for the Wii: the first accessory I've seen or imagined that dovetails into the Wii's celebrity status as a party machine.

The blue-lit center holds a removable snack holder and dip bowl, while four Wiimote holders flank the sides and removable, freezable-lined cup holders stand guard at each corner. The front of the gadget houses a storage drawer for gaming oddments, a bowling-style cooling fan to pamper your perspiring palms, and something I thought might be potentially super fun: four LED scoreboards that allow up to four teams of players to easily keep score across any number of different games.

While the final design will include a larger snack repository and a lower profile, the idea of tying the Wii's many, many party games with a simple meta-game that can fit multiple situations got me excited - tying an evening of drunken Wii gaming together with a way to tie the whole session together no matter how many different games you play. Fun!

The Party Station will run on either AA or D batteries, and with only LEDs and an on-demand hand fan to power, it should last for quite some time sitting on your coffee table (or waiting politely somewhere tidy for the next party). Perhaps not for the casual Wii gamer, the Party Station looks like it will appeal directly to those of us using our Wiis as either the focus of social gatherings or an appendix to our already hoppin' house parties.

What do you think, gang? Are wii in for a few beers and chips at Rancho Tiny, or is this too cute for its own good? Talk to me!

That seems like one hell of a good way to score with your straight friends! :-D Fill the cups up with tequila, lemon's on the chips dish and salt in the dip bowl. Make a few bets, (keep hitting the + button of your own scoreboard secretly, every time they drink) they wont know what hit'em in the morning! (or what hit you, if you're lucky!).
In other words, yeah, this would make for one hell of a party/make-out accesory.
