E3 07: The Simpsons Game

lardladmad.jpg

I unfortunately only got a few minutes to sit down and check out The Simpsons Game, but what I saw, I really enjoyed. I must admit, though, that it was rather difficult to pay close attention to it as the guy demo-ing it was an absolute dreamboat that had Tiny and I all in a dither.

One of the first things he explained to us was that the game is in no way related to the movie. It is it's own stand alone game and as such they were able to include much more than if they had had to stick to the movie. With this freedom, EA decided to have a go at themselves (and everyone else) with themed levels that included jokes referencing other games and franchises. We were able to see two levels, Medal of Homer and Grand Theft Scratchy which were both hilarious. One of my favorite visual gags was a sign on a game store called "Sequel Stop" which was done in red and white letters like the GameStop logo.

Like a typical Simpsons episode, the game was jam packed with references and jokes from past episodes, some subtle, some not so subtle. We were told that there were far more sound bytes in this game so that unlike past games, you won't hear the same lines repeated every time you run into the same character. They also developed a new cel-shading technique that allows everything to remain 2D even while remaing in 3D. For example, rotating the camera around lisa, her hair remains looking "flat" like on the show instead of looking like a demented porcupine.

After showing us the Grand Theft Scratchy level (featuring Marge's "nagging" ability), Mr. Cutie handed the control over and I got to roam around the streets of "France" in the Medal of Homer level featuring Bart and Homer. Everything about it looked terrific and I feel comfortable in saying this will be the best Simpsons game we've yet seen.

Then our time was up and we were jetting off to our next meeting, but The Simpsons Game is certainly one that stuck with me as a highlight long after the demo was over.
