E3: The Witcher

I know, I know - wasn't E3 like last year? Well some of our buns are just now coming out of the oven. Aren't you glad we pace it all for you? Infoglut is bad for the digestion...

This RPG from Eastern European studio CD Projekt and Polish fantasy author Andrzej Sapowski follows the journey of a kind of magical hitman created by torturous arcane mutation to be the ultimate destroyer of magical beasties. Wielding two swords - one mundane, for regular dudes, and another silver sword that's less deadly to humans but highly toxic to creatures of the supernatural persuasion.

The Witcher runs on a heavily-modified version of BioWare's Aurora Engine, and while the practiced eye can tell, the game definitely runs beautifully. The gameplay was explained to me as a mix between Knights of the Old Republic and God of War, and there's definitely a console-style feel to the game, which is unusual for a PC RPG. Between the over-the-shoulder perspective, three fighting stances for each sword, two magic modes (short bursts and longer charged-up magic) and the excellent addition of timing-based chain attacks, The Witcher has definite ambitions beyond the scope of the traditional PC RPG. (I even heard what sounded like good voice acting - although the lord knows, don't quote me on that.)

CD Projekt has clearly put a lot of work into this baby, which has been in the pipeline for quite a while, and I'll be looking forward to seeing the finish product when the game launches this fall. Won't you join me?
