Missle Command Arriving On Xbox Live Arcade

Missile Command

Missile Command is truly a classic game. It's been around since what seems like the dawn of time...or at least the golden age of arcade gaming. No doubt it's a blast to command three missile platforms to defend your cities from devastation and it can be a fantastic waster of time. Now it finally arrives on Xbox Live Arcade complete with new graphics, music and sound effects.

In addition to that, up to two players will be able to play together locally or over Xbox LIVE and earn up to 12 Achievements worth 200 Gamerscore points. If you're not too familiar with this game (shame on you), read on:

While staying true to the original arcade classic, the enhanced “Missile Command” for Xbox LIVE Arcade has players acting as regional commander of three anti-missile batteries defending six cities in their zone. As Planet Zardon is under attack by an endless hail of interplanetary ballistic missiles from Krytol, players must act fast to fend off the missiles and keep their cities intact. Gliding across the sky, players complete levels by taking out all enemy weaponry. At the end of a level, players can earn bonus points for the more cities that remain and the fewer missiles that are used.

Missile Command will be available this Wednesday, July 4 at 9:00 a.m. GMT (2:00 a.m. Pacific) for 400 Microsoft Points.

Missile Command without the palm-pinching TrakBall? That is utter blasphemy!

Madness, even! ...but my palms are quietly rejoicing.

Yeah, if only Nintendo would get off their high horse about offering actual arcade games instead of just games that appeared on the NES, Missile Command could actually be cool again, if a bit tiring. I think it's okay with a mouse, but I've never liked it with a joystick, analog or otherwise.

Apart from Pac-Man, it seems like XBLA is the place to go for American-style games (mostly shooters in the style of Atari, Williams, Gottlieb, etc.) and Nintendo is the place to go for Japanese-style games, except that apparently the world only began in 1985. I guess you could really extend that out to cover the philosophies of both consoles in general. I don't say that to praise or insult either one; I have a Wii but I envied Geometry Wars when it appeared on XBLA, and I envy this too.

Vector games in particular are something that I think have been sorely underrepresented in the retro craze, and now that we have all these amazing 3D chipsets that are like the great grandkids of vector graphics, it should be possible to make both faithful emulations and brain-exploding updates (a la Geometry Wars) of stuff like Star Castle and Space Duel.

That's right, two more American games. So I guess if there's any hope of seeing that happen, it'll be on XBLA and I'll be getting a faux woodgrain modded 360.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
