Nielsen Monitoring PS3 Usage

With more companies interested in in-game advertising, it was a matter of time before Nielsen got involved in gaming. Sony Computer Entertainment America recently teemed up with Nielsen to study the gaming habits of Sony gamers. Sony hopes to use the information gathered to reach gamers with effective in-game advertising, and prove to companies that they can reach gamers through their console.
Nielsen representative Karen Gylmesi confirmed they will be using their National People Meter to collect the gaming data for Sony. The National People Meter is comprised of 12,000 households and is the same used to monitor television ratings. Gylmesi stated that they will be able to measure, "Any video game devise that hooks up to the TV."
The deal between Sony and Nielsen allows for both companies to share information. Nielsen will report their findings to Sony and Sony will allow Nielsen to study game network traffic and other data from PS3s, PlayStation Network, and PlayStation Home. The company will then analyze the data to calculate reach frequency and effectiveness of game network advertising.
The innocent days of gaming are slowly slipping away. I look into the dark future where your gaming will be interrupted for 3 minutes of commercials for every 10 minutes of play. Most textures will be replaced with advertisements for control top pantyhose, adult diapers and diarrhea medication. You will be able to get car insurance quotes from any computer terminal from within the game. Or just visit that Geiko gecko on an eternally sun-setting veranda with a spot of tea and biscuits while he wastes your time trying to say he's not a spokesperson for an insurance company. Meanwhile salesmen circle above your avatar like vultures over a day old carcass in the desert.

Gah! I loved that bumper between the commercials! In hindsight, it's a little creepy that they all switched heads, but it's nevertheless entertaining.
Holy shit I remember that bumper! After these messages we'll be Riiiiiight Back!
