PS3 80GB Announced, 60GB Price Cut Confirmed

ps3499.jpg

Late last night, one of our stable of carrier pigeons arrived at my window, squawking to beat the band. I pried open my sleepy eyes enough to the see the title on the missive and quickly snapped to attention.

The long rumored (and denied) PS3 price cut has finally been confirmed by Sony! According to the press release, the news is actually two fold. A new 80Gb unit, previously only available in select parts of the world, will be available in North America beginning in August for $599 and will come bundled with a copy of Motorstorm. The 60GB model will now be receiving a $100 price cut, bringing it down to a nearly reasonable $499.

While this is great news for those of us who have yet to be able to afford a PS3, I'm sure there will be more than a few of those folks who waited in long lines for their 60GB at $599 who are going to be more than a little annoyed. This is still a smart move by Sony who have been beleaguered with complaints over the systems high price tag since it's debut last fall and my guess is this will finally jump start what has been slow start for the PS3. Trust me, I'm already saving my pennies. Now excuse me while I go rifle my couch cushions for change.

So, I can see how this will help Sony a little bit, but I also don't see people rushing out to buy a PS3 until Final Fantasy 13 arrives. And by then they might have to drop the price again, so my advice to anyone thinking of getting a PS3 is just keep waiting. Low sales will force them to lower the price again! Yay!

I just think it sucks that sony can't keep their big news until their press conferences. Home was leaked early, this was leaked early, it seems the world is conspiring against sony. Not that I'd buy a $500 computer that can't run OSX, but still, part of me wants them to have some good fortune.

Still not interested. When (if) it gets some games I will buy one - like I bought my 360, xbox, ps2, gamecube and PC.

At the moment I'd rather save for an iPhone than a George Foreman Grill Ripoff with no games!

Sony used to rock, now... not so much

I had said earlier in the year that I was going to buy a PS3 after the price drop, but I just don't care anymore. I've got a 360 which is awesome and there are more games coming out for it than I could manage to finish. Besides, I'm looking for ways to minimize my consumption, so a pass for me on the PS3.

Nearly reasonable? I'd say it's just right. The normal Xbox 360 Premium costs $400. With the new price cut, for $100 more you get built in wireless, a bigger hard drive and built-in Blu-Ray. Buying any two of those things for the 360 costs $200+. Either way, I don't think they are going to see a gigantic raise in sales seeing as they lack a lot of great titles. But with Lair and Ninja Gaiden: Sigma coming out soon, both exclusives, they are on the road to recovery.

Still too high for me. I refuse to pay more than 400 euros for a gaming system.

Yeah, but I didn't buy the premium, I don't need a bigger hard drive and I don't care about blu-ray. And I think I'm at least somewhat typical in these respects.

Thus Sony's continuing problem.

I'm glad the price dropped! But I didn't wait in line for my 60GB either. I got my 60GB PS3 for free from my university with 2 extra controllers and Madden 07! But now with the 80GB, I wish I could win that. At least with the lower price my friends can afford to purchase one and finally I have some friends on the network. Sony will always have problems, but they tend to fix them.
