Video: Quantic Dream Develops New PS3 Title

[WARNING- NOT SAFE FOR WORK. This scene contains explicit language.]

Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios announced today a partnership with developer Quantic Dream, to produce an exclusive PS3 game. The developer has been known to push the cinematic boundaries of gaming with their previous efforts Indigo Prophecy and Omikron: The Nomad Soul. Both games were known for intricately woven narratives that emotionally engage the player.

President and CEO of Quantic Dream, David Cage stated that they chose Sony because,

“We always believed that "next generation" meant more meaningful content based on players' emotional involvement. To us, PS3 is the only platform that can truly deliver on this promise, and SCE WWS is a group that is both inspiring and pleasant to work with."

They have not disclosed the name of the title yet, but their website states that they are currently working on Heavy Rain as a “confidential next generation console game.” Hmm… it seems that this may be the next gen game they are developing as a PS3 exclusive.

Last year Quantic Dream showed an actor audition teaser trailer for Heavy Rain at E3. The trailer has some of the most realistic animation I’ve seen in a game engine, but there are details that are both disturbing and compelling equally. She moves realistically, but not everywhere. Her lips are off and move strangely. Also her teeth are too perfect to believe that she is real, in this respect she looks like a Franklin Mint Collector’s doll. Regardless, this is a feat of nuanced animation. Notice her hands when she is sitting on the chair, how each finger conveys her nervousness. Watch the weight of her head as she moves around the room. The character has a unique physicality rarely seen in games. I hope that this is an example of what we can expect from their forthcoming title.

Wow. That movement was fantastic. I can only imagine it's mo-capped, because it was just so dead-on. Realistic human movement is one of the hardest things to animate. I know. I tried. The detail is very immersive, but they'll never really achieve the realism they want unless they do a LOT more work on the lip synch. Her teeth were enormous, and her lips barely moved in time with the words, let alone in the actual shapes that lips move to form specific syllables. Too bad. Lip synch is what always throws CGI animation off. Someday!

Sometimes I really wish I could appreciate the graphical things going on in a clip like that. I mean, I recognise that it's very realistic, but there's very little distinction in my brain between something like that and say, metal gear solid 2.

What hooked me was the Michael Nyman-esque soundtrack. I’m a big fan of his music, and this was very reminiscent of his music.

This was amazing for more than just the animation (which, agreed, is fantastic).

Either the voice actress is really, really good, or she's really, really lucky. Observe when she starts reciting the lines for the audition. It's mechanical, almost boring. But soon she gets into the groove, so to speak, and I found myself completely drawn in. The background switch completes the illusion, and when we switch back to the audition room, it feels like being suddenly pulled back to reality.

This is probably the most amazing/intriguing game trailer I've ever seen.

that was really good, the guy at the end killed me when he said she was too tall.

She looked completely real towards the end when the room was dark.

I'm very impressed. Like you all, I really felt the animation movements was extrodinary and what other games should really work on other than just realistic environments.

There were less lips and cheek movements so certain words were a little off for speaking. However, this is a step in the right direction especially if it is in game.

Oh my god that voice actress was amazing! I wanna know who she is! The only thing that bugged me were the lips, the crease seemed just a tad bit fake to me but other than that! The soundtrack was unbelievable and the setting was off the hook. What kind of game is this going to be? I can only imagine some sort of Max Payne stuff or something like it. I honestly would buy the game for the voice acting alone, that was truly amazing, it really pulled me in.

I sentence you to death for turning my life into a soap opera cliché...

WHAT A SENTENCE!

and obviously the first reason to think about getting a PS3.

The animation is great. The character believable. The music fantastic. My question is was this only a demo for artistic machima sake, or are they taking this somewhere that I want to play?

Even if it's machima, I'll watch it.
