Review: Bomberman Live
Tonight I downloaded Bomberman Live off of XBLA and had a blast! Uhhhhh Sorry, I had to. Seriously, the game feels as tight as the original and just as fun. Developer Backbone Entertainment has managed to capture the same frenetic pace as the 16-bit offerings with a pleasing 3D coat of paint and multiplayer live support.
The graphics are bright and crisp with the same art style you have come to expect from Bomberman, sans the horrendous Bomberman Zero of course. Players can build their own Bomberman from a hodgepodge of pieces from the top of his head, his face, and even a saucy costume. There are about nine pieces to choose when you start the game, and you unlock the rest of the pieces as the game progresses. I built a rather fetching ballerina on point with a sassy bun and a sexy pirate eye patch with beard stubble.
Local play supports up to four people while Live play supports up to eight players. You can customize everything in a match from number of players to number of wins and time limits for each round. There are eight arenas to choose from including Classic, Lost World, Ghost Town, Thin Ice, Big Top, Plunder Isle, Spaced Out, and Blast!. Each of the levels have a corresponding costume set. So you can host a round and match your environment, how chic!
I would recommend the title to anyone interested in some fast-paced old-school gameplay that is appealing enough for players of any age to pick up and enjoy.
