60GB PS3s: Going, Going.... Gone

DodoSkeleton2.jpg

Ding, ding, ding! That's it, all of the remaining 60GB PS3s have been shipped to retailers, and there are no more units available in SCEA warehouses. We reported yesterday that the SonyStyle.com store was out of stock, now Sony's Dave Karraker told Gamepro:

"We no longer have any inventory in SCEA warehouses. All inventory has been purchased and shipped to retailers. We don't have visibility as to if that is on their store shelves or in their warehouses at this time. However, based on inventory reports from our retailers, there is ample supply still left in the channel.

So the 60GB model is the last generation of models to include the 'emotion engine' that allows hardware emulation for backwards compatibility. The 80GB models are $100 more, and they do not have the 'emotion engine' and are backwards compatible through software emulation. You do get 20 extra gigabytes, and a copy of Motorstorm. Although there is a rumor going around that Sony will drop the price of the 80GB model $100 once all of the 60GB ones are sold, but they are keeping their lips shut tight for now.
