BioShock Launch Party

tinyhelen.jpg

Fruit Brute and I have just returned from a Big Daddy of a launch party in Boston, where BioShock celebrated its own birth last night at a local nightclub, Felt. When we first arrived, we waited on line for the joint to finish setting up, and we took the opportunity to mingle with our friend and colleague from Joystiq - who was also our host - the lovely Alexander.

More than a few of the attendees arrived in costume, and Felt was decked out in perfect BioShock style: Splicer models covered in latex gore stood menacingly along walls adorned with advertisements for consumer plasmids and Rapture services. Upstairs, 360s and PCs were packed with BioShock players while the rest of the crowd mingled in horrific-yet-stylish bliss.

Make the jump to read about why we love Ken Levine, why I won't ever get a review copy of Rock Band, and why blood-splattered Little Sister cocktail waitresses were squirting syringes filled with appletini "Adam" into our mouths!

Well, my mouth, specifically. I should have turned into a Splicer, I suppose, but all that Adam stuff did was get me drunk enough to thank Harmonix's Helen McWilliams (above, with writer-at-large Scott Jones) for the fringe benefits of playing too much Guitar Hero: improved "hand love" skills, played on the fretless instruments of boyfriends and bodyguards 'round the world. By the end of the night we'd coined the term "GHHJ's" and I'd taken personal disclosure to a whole new level.

Meanwhile, Fruit Brute was not only behaving himself, he was one of the few men attending in full-on BioShock dress. See him below, charming the skirts off of BioShock content producer Melissa Miller, whose reaction was so positive it left us positively glowing. You may remember Melissa's melodious voiceover on the Hunting the Big Daddy video.

We also got a lot of site love from Ken Levine, who reiterated his appreciation of and support for the site, and whose lovely wife complimented FB's custom banner - she even knew our noms de net! While we were soaking up the glitz of all that is BioShock, the ever-industrious Alexander took a moment to ask our pal Ken the following very smart question:

"What would possess a man to take a syringe, with no explanation of what's inside it, and jam it into his forearm?"

And it was delightful to hear Ken Levine's honest answer:

"We get that one a lot. We probably should have had Atlas say something to make it more fluid. But it'll all make sense by the end of the game."

Then we left, giving the life-sized Big Daddy model a kiss on the drillbit, one of us in costume and the other intoxicated, swinging our swag bags and crying "BioShock, BioShock" all the way home.

Helen McWilliams is and always has been the bomb. We were in the LGBT group at Brandeis together and she was the one Fairy Princess who, when you took her to a party, YOU became the accessory. Had I known she would eventually break into the biz (and frickin' rock the stage at E3), I would have climbed into her messenger bag and never left.

PS: I underline Musashi's comment about both of you men being mad sexy. Seriously, though: this needs to stop. This is the one space in the internet where I TRY NOT to think about sex, and you guys are just not conducive.

NOT conducive!! :)
