Gans Speaks About Onimusha

Onimusha!

Movie site, Ecran Large, had the pleasure of sitting with Director Christophe Gans (Silent Hill, Brotherhood of the Wolf) concerning his latest project, Onimusha. Since I cannot read French, the following information was obtained from DarkHorizons:

  • Gans is currently doing the final preps for the movie in Paris.
  • He'll move to China in October to begin the pre-production: sets building, costumes.
  • The shooting will start in March 2008 around Beijing and will entirely take place within studios, the very same studios where movies like Zhang Yimou's "Hero" was shot.
  • The shooting is expected to be over by the end of July 2008, just before the Olympics Games start.
  • The whole cast & crew is composed of both Chinese and Japanese people, apart from a couple of folks like cinematographer Dan Laustsen.
  • The $70 millions budget is co-financed by China, Japan, the United States and long time Gans producer Samuel Hadida.

It most certainly sounds like the movie is well on its way! Hopefully, the action will be as fun as the games. It's a shame I never beat Genma Onimusha. I always get my ass kicked by the enemy known only as...Marcellus. What the hell kind of name is that for a demon from Hell anyways!?!? Sigh....

Can't wait, I really enjoyed Gans take on Silent Hill.
I really hope Oda Nobunaga's in it- He's one of my favorite gay (or bi I suppose) video game characters. I loved the way his relationship with Mori was hinted at in Onimusha 3, I remember checking a biography of his after playing it and thinking 'WOW! That actually WAS his boyfriend, and not just wishful thinking on my part...!'.

I seem to remember in Genma Onimusha they named most of the major demon characters after characters from Shakespeare's Hamlet. I don't remember the story particularly mirroring Hamlet though, so I think the naming was merely a stylistic choice (though admittedly odd to me).
