Homophobic Homebrew On The DS

runaway.jpg

Homebrew is a fantastic way for creative amateur developers to show off their talents and hopefully energize the gaming world with their unconventional concepts. Unfortunately, it would appear that just as with life, there's going to be a few rotten apples in the bunch. The game RanAway 1.0 by Huntercool is a homebrew title for the Nintendo DS in which you are an odd lemon-headed boy with his junk out who has to avoid little blobby things that are meant to represent the "gay mob." The description on Huntercool's message board post reads: "They are out to get you! Run away to avoid the kiss of death! Use the stylus to move the little boy and try to avoid getting hit." Avoidance of the gay blobs means victory, but if one touches you, it's game over, and the image of two male Naruto characters informs you that "You got hit by a gay person. Game Over."

Yes, the graphics are amateurish, and the gameplay would seem to be beyond basic (I haven't played it, and would never sully my precious DS with it), and it's likely created by a teenager with too much time on his hands and too much hate in his heart. (Maybe he does homebrew when he's not sabotaging websites with DOS attacks?) But at the same time, it's worth noting the existence of this hateful little title. Right now the object of the game is simply to avoid the gay blobs. But what if Huntercool's next project is a game in which you not only avoid the gay blobs, but also kill them? At what point does this go from offensive to scary? The whole thing would be comical if it wasn't so sad and unfortunate. Sub-8-bit graphics aside, we have a "little boy" running away from gay men and their "kiss of death." Sigh. This is the world we live in, folks.

Doesn't this make you wanna just jump up and hug hateful people?

No?

I thought not, also.

Wait, the game already exists. I can't remember what it's called, but you wandered through a small park, and these little naked guys would come at you, and you had to shoot them. I would usually shoot a couple, then let him get caught.

Does that make me a bad person?

I hardly see how this is newsworthy. We all know there are children and other idiots who think like this. They shouldn't be rewarded by having their name and their game advertised.

Someone spent a lot of time and effort making a game about gays. Hmm. Homosexuality would have to occupy a lot of their thoughts for them to go through with such a thing.

Well, it has been scientifically shown that the majority of homophobes are, in reality, self hating closet cases. So, yeah...

This isn't gaming news, I don't want to hear about crap like this.

First you call the ps2 an antique, now this! Post something good :(

Richie is completely on the money. It's a waste of precious, precious Internet to even report this. We're giving him the exact thing he wants: attention.

There's much worse thing sout there to worry about then a dipshit 12 year old with no brains.

Have you been able to contact and interview the guy/gal that created this?

I've become very suspicious lately of obviously smart people using gays and lesbians to generate attention for themselves and their work. They deliberately create something in a way that is guaranteed to get people talking. Outrage makes it spread faster.

I think it's wrong in either case, but I say again, there's nothing more satisfying to a too-clever teen-ager then to get people riled up over something stupidly fabricated...

C'mon guys this is not the cover of the NYT it's a blog so of course this is news worthy.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
