Interplay Is In The Black, Wants Funding For Fallout MMO
Interplay is back in black and it wants to play! Well, at least it wants funding for the much talked about Fallout MMORPG. In fact, Interplay says it's "key" to its future and, no doubt, its survival. The company posted a profit that had a lot to do with the sale of the Fallout property to Bethesda in April for $5.75 million, reports GameSpot, and nearly non-existent operating costs. The three month period ending June 30, 2007, saw the company turn a $5.46 million in profit. The grand total for the "quarterly revenues were $5.81 million, up 2,431 percent from the same period in 2006." You can imagine that Interplay CEO, Herve Caen, was very happy. Here's what he had to say:
"I am pleased with the progress the company has made, particularly with our debt load, which has improved from $59 million in December 2001 to less than $3 million today," Caen said in a statement. "With that difficult period behind us, we are focused on securing funding for development of a massively multiplayer online game based on the popular Fallout franchise. ... Fallout Online will play a key role in the future of Interplay."
When Fallout Online was announced last year, nothing more than that was really said. No details on the game have come out, but GameSpot reminds us that their plans did include raising $75 million dollars for the game's development. At present, the launch date of the new title is still set for July 2010.
I'm just very pleased that this once mighty and still legendary developer has got a good start to getting on both of its feet. Perhaps, with the hopeful success of Fallout Online, we will see Interplay take its seat as one of the best developers around, again.
