SIXAXIS: Let's Get Ready To Rumble!!! ...Or Not?
Well... I'll certainly have more to say about our weekend adventure later, but for now it's a pleasure just to be back in the business of having a voice and using it, because I discovered having your voice taken from you suddenly is a pretty brutal thing. I felt much worse for our community, having the safely-gayed space we've all created disappear so suddenly.
But we're back. After a bit of a rumble.
You know what's not back, ironically? Rumble.
Despite reports precisely to the contrary, Sony told GamePro that while new SIXAXIS prototypes have been sent to developers as "part of the normal development and evolution of controllers," these updated SIXAXES (Sony can take away rumble, but they can't take away my dogged devotion to language...yet) don't include any sort of rumbleyness:
"We recently sent out to the development community some new prototypes that have a slightly enhanced sensitivity for the analog sticks and the motion sensing within the Sixaxis controller."
"This is not a new controller, but is part of the normal development and evolution of controllers."
This from Dave Karraker, who might not be allowed to tell us about rumble even if it is coming to the SIXAXIS. As a huge fan of anything that vibrates in my lap, not to mention anything that adds a good scare to and heightens the immersion within video games, I sure hope that's the case. But for now all we get is this:
"We have not added rumble [to PS3], and have no announcements regarding this feature."
That's cool, Dave. Enhanced motion control and analog performance are totally valid things to add, even though I still crave physical feedback. And if I've learned one thing recently, it's that I can take a punch and keep on truckin'.
