Review: Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition

re4_boxfront_wii.jpg

I played Resident Evil 4 on both the Gamecube and the PS2, although admittedly I didn't finish it to completion on either system because let's face it, it's damned hard! Hard, yes and undoubtedly one of the best games in the Resident Evil franchise. When I heard that RE4 was coming to the Wii I was thrilled, and once I had tried RE: Umbrella Chronicles with the benefit of the Wii remote (and eventually the Wii Zapper), I was even more excited. Finally, a chance to play one of my favorite games with a control system that would make up for my dreadful controller based shooting abilities.

As soon as I fired up the game I breathed a sigh of relief at how nice the graphics looked. As much as I love the Wii, there have been several instances of games that I was looking forward to not quite meeting expectations graphically on the little white system. RE4 however, looks fantastic and I found myself sucked into the story all over again.

The new controls only took a few minutes to get used to (although Toots said he had a hard time relearning them at first) and once I had them down I was pulling off head shots right and left. I also found that I used the knife attack more now since it could be achieved by a smart shaking of the remote. The controls are definitely the tightest I've seen in a Wii game and I found myself getting much further, much faster than I had done in the other two versions. Several times in the Gamecube version, I found myself throwing the controller down in frustration as a result of my crappy aiming skills. Not so with the Wii version; point, shoot, obliterate. It's as easy as that!

If you are a Wii owner and have never experienced the bloody goodness of Resident Evil 4, I would highly recommend picking this up and giving it a try. It's decidedly one of the best games of the last-gen systems and on the Wii it's a truly exciting experience. If you've already played the game and are craving more, the $30 price tag makes it a relatively cheap buy and the new controls practically make it a brand new game. Plus, (for those of you that played on the Gamecube) this version includes the extra content and missions that were added to the PS2 version. A definite must for any Resident Evil fan.

After a while with the game, I was able to adapt to the new control scheme. Playing this title again with this new control setup made the experience seem completely fresh, even though essentially it's the same game. I agree with Fruit on the recommendation, it's a tight game that controls beautifully, and adds a beefy title to the Wii lineup.

I think new users would take to it really easily... it's people like myself who played the crap out of the GC version that sort of have to re-learn the interface a bit. After 15 minutes though, you're off to the races. The game is every bit as fun as it was on the Gamecube, has extra content, and an is being offered at a sweet price.

Totally worth the purchase. Get it!

The new controls made the game a blast for me again, too bad I was wasting ammo like mad crazy.

Are you able to set the difficulty this time around? Or does the new control scheme make up for it? The GC version was far too challenging for me.

Why wouldn't you finish the game? Was the game too hard for you? Should mommy help you out on Resident Evil 5? How can you do a review of a game if you don't even play it through and then proudly call that out. Gaygamer needs to step it up. Seriously. Sometimes the editorial on this site is as fluffy as it gets. Step it up.
