Video: Final Fantasy Retrospective Part 6

GameTrailers is continuing its beautifully written and well informed (although I take exception to the way some of the names are pronounced) retrospective of the Final Fantasy series with Part 6. There's nothing quite like the nostalgia of a game, and if you're a fan of Final Fantasy, at least a little, watching any part of the retrospective is not only touching, but makes you want to play it all over again.

I've been arguing this for a long time, but there is something about the bond we make with games that goes beyond almost any other media experience. Movies are influential and loved but are short experiences and essentially passive. Books and comics can get inside you (yes, that does sounds dirty) and can be time consuming, but as a reader there is very little power. A game is not only a time consuming and rewarding experience, but you actually are an efficacious piece of the whole. Add in a good story that actually makes you weep, and you've got something unforgettable. So let's take a look at VIII and IX, two really wonderful games that have a special place in my heart and hopefully, many of yours as well. I still get chills just when I think of Irvine taking that shot at Edea and Garnet turning to see Zidane in the crowd.

Ah, RPGs. Best habit I ever picked up.

What names did they butcher? Zidane's sounded a little odd, but then again, many of the names in the Final Fantasy series could be pronounced multiple ways. Technically the only correct way would be the way the creators (or the lead localizers?) pronounce it.

That's interesting that Sakaguchi considers IX to be his favorite in the series. I can definitely see why though. For the same reasons the video cited, I have a soft spot in my heart for IX because it harkens back to the SNES golden era of the series.

I'm curious as to how the retrospective will treat my guilty pleasure of the series, FFX-2.

i also love x-2, though any number of people will look at you sideways for admitting it.

this series on gt is really terrific and has filled my soul with more nostalgia than it's used to.

the pronunciation issue, i agree with (particularly zidane), but it could be worse - check out their zelda retrospective and be driven utterly mad by the mispronunciation of 'ocarina,' which they insist on pronouncing 'oh-carina,' which is, of course, not even remotely correct. it's 'ah-carina.' and of course the game's such a touchstone that they have to say it 30 thousand times in each entry. grr...

Wouldn't it have made more sense to go numerical?
Last one was 7 and now 9. They're not even going the other way around as they haven't done 8 yet.

Nexus, maybe you should watch the video before commenting. This entry covers both 8 and 9.

Have you ever read a book besides harry potter? Videogames are fun, i love them, but they are at least a thousand years away from having narratives as sofisticated as literature's classics.

I'll get around to that wolfbrother. My own computer doesn't play Youtube movies (or any other webvids or flashstuff for that matter) anymore, so I have to watch it on the family computer downstairs.
A bit dissapointing that they give 7 a full thing and that they put 8 and 9 together. Like they're not deserving of single coverage. Or is it twice as large as the FF7 one?

I don't object, really. There's no denying that VII was one of the most influential games in the series, so it rightfully deserves its own entry. And if they have to squish some of the other games together to make room for the non-numerical games (like X-2, for instance), well, that's fine with me. The important thing is that the video doesn't feel rushed. Yeah, it'd be nice if they spent more time talking about FFVIII, but I can't think of anything they missed (Kudos to them for mentioning "Eyes On Me"!).
