Video: Final Fantasy Retrospective Does FFVII

GameTrailers
' Final Fantasy Retrospective (which if you haven't been watching, is one of the best and most informed looks at the Final Fantasy series I think I have ever found) is at that most pivotal of games in the series: Final Fantasy VII. Being the first game for Square that was not only not on a Nintendo system but also on CDs and in 3D with cutscenes, this was the game that would make or break the company. If you've ever played VII (and really who hasn't?), you owe it to yourself to take a look at this 15 minute nostalgia fest. Hearing the music, those moments that you could never forget, that most memorable of game baddies... it's enough to make even the butchest, grumpiest bear get a tear in his eye.

Can't wait for their look at VIII, which for my money, is the series' most underappreciated.

FFVIII was underappreciated because it sucked. :P

I kid, I kid but it wasn't nearly one of my favorite FF games, which FFVII is. It was just an iconic game and it was the RPG that defined the industry standard for a 3D JRPG, for better or for worse.

The only word I can use to describe FFVII is "overrated." Sure it was fun (though not as much as some of the previous games in the series) and I played through the whole thing but honestly I don't see what all the fuss is about. I look back on it and just think "ehh." FFVI was much more memorable and enjoyable.

FF8 was a masterpiece. And people who can't appreaciate it have no taste.
But FF7 was also a very good game.
Please put up the FF8 one when they do that one.

I think IX was the most under appreciated installment, it seemed to be lost between the war of VII vs VIII and the excitement of X. VIII is by far my favorite in the series and is my favorite video game in general. I felt as though the plot was thought through and the characters given a more human edge, while still maintaining that sense of "fantasy". VII seemed far too cookie cutter and it appealed to American gamers because of the big swords, big bosomed babes and the long hair samurai fascination. Though a good game, I don't think VII can hold a candle to the visual nuances and musical graces of VIII.

I still feel that people *want* to dislike FF VII because it's such a popular game. No one wants to be labeled as a raving fanboy, now do they? ;P

I can honestly say that I think FF VII's storyline is still the best damn storyline I've ever seen in any videogame, book or movie ever. FF VIII has the hottest characters (mmm, Irvine x Zell x Squall) in the series, FF VI has the best audio and the most diverse cast, FF IX has a very appealing fairy tale atmosphere, FF XII has the best gameplay in my opinion etc. They all just have so much greatness in them!

Yes, I am a raving fanboy, and I ain't afraid to admit it. ;D

I agree with Keith and disagree with S but agree with Charlee's comments about VII. My honest opinion is that I actually find VII to be my least favorite in the series with the first two not that much higher ranked above it. It feels very copped out and stretched out and most of the hoopla around it is that it was 3-D, but there were already several others that were a couple other fully 3-D RPGs that were out before it. Then again, with how much it is raved, if it were even officially "re-released" as a text adventure game for compatability only in MS-DOS of computers Win '95 or earlier, it would still sell well over 2 million copies on day 1 (no offense to text adventure games because they are extremely fun and engaging games, but I'm making this reference because a lot of people are VERY concerned about graphics...ESPECIALLY when it comes to the FF series).

FFVII was the first Final fantasy game that i played and for that reason alone it is my favorite. whoever hates on that game needs some face stabbage. i remember playing it i think in 98 when it was relatively unknown (at least i didnt know about it) and literally on the verge of crying when my beloved aeris died. Yes it took me about 7 years to actually purchase it and then once again for the pc and finally beat it but its still my fav and best compared to the ones i played 3, x, x-2 (yeah i havent played it much)
