BlizzCon 07: Wrath Of The Lich King Unveiled!

lichking.jpg

OMG. Where's Lazy Panda, I need to hug her and jump up and down like the two WoW-addicted schoolgirls we are! So, god, let's cut to the chase: as was expected, Blizzard has announced the second expansion pack to World of Warcraft, called Wrath of the Lich King. With it, players level 68 and higher will venture onto the frozen continent of Northrend, domain of the Lich King - once Arthas Menethil, proud scion of Lordamere, now ruler of the undead Scourge and pretty much the baddest-ass villain this side of Sargeras himself.

Unlike The Burning Crusade, the latest expansion pack doesn't spread its goodies to players of all levels. Wrath of the Lich King goes out to the homies - higher-level characters who've battled their way through Azeroth's grandest dungeons and explored the secrets of Outland:

Level Cap: 80
Skill Cap: 450
New Zones: 10 (for now)
New Profession: Inscription
Hero Class: (yes, Hero Class!!!)
World PvP: Outdoor PvP zone with siege weapons and destructible buildings.

Make the jump for details, including release date!

Am I insane? There's no release date on this baby, not by a long shot. The release date as it stands is "Sometime long after you stop crying and hugging yourself, you addict."

On launch day, WoW players will be able to sail to Northrend from various points in Azeroth, and will have their choice of two starting zones: the Borean Tundra in the west and the easterly Howling Fjord (for levels 68-72). The varied zones of Northrend will also introduce a race of 15-ft tall Norse-inspired folk called the Vrykul, most of whom are thralls of the Lich King. The benevolent Tuskarr (think baby seals, walruses, tusks, cute big round eyes? also live on Northrend, and will presumably be more accommodating.

Hero Class! Yes, WoW's first Hero Class is the Death Knight. How will an entirely new mechanic like Hero Classes be worked into the game, you ask? Upon reaching level 80, players can take up a quest that unlocks the ability to create an entirely separate character, the Death Knight, who will start the game at a high level - 60 to 70ish. It's an alternative end-game class that blends plate-wearing tanksmanship with high DPS. I am so there.

Eschewing mana, energy or rage, the Death Knight will have a "Rune Sword" beneath their health bar that can hold six different runes. Various abilities consume these runes while a cooldown timer counts down until they'll be ready again. Word on races, abilities, spells and such is still scarce, so keep your eyes peeled for new information.

Oh, we can't leave without discussing the new profession, Inscription! It gives players the power to customize individual spells and abilities, changing cooldown times and crit rates, etc. Morph a shadow bolt or pump up a healing buff, I guess? Lord Almighty, I need to go change my diaper...
