Rumor Mill: Lower Priced PS3 In The Works

According to reports from Sky News, the rumors of a 40GB PS3 model may be in production. Sony has turned to FoxConn, the makers of PS2s, to manufacture the entry level PS3. The 80GB and 60GB models with continue to be produced by ASUSTeK.
There are rumors that all models will get a price cut, and the speculated price of the PS3 is $399. A few features of the bigger models may be cut like the USB ports and the backwards compatibility to reduce the cost of the system.
The rumored launch may be soon to counteract the gigantic Halo 3 launch that is less than a day away. Personally, I don’t think anything could stop the Halo 3 hype machine. They could be offering PS3s for free in Times Square on Wednesday, and it would look like a ghost town. The tumbleweeds would even be occupied playing Halo 3 with the rest of the world.

there's no way they can remove all of the USB ports from the console. they're required for syncing and charging controllers as well as for all peripherals.
maybe limit the number of them, but remove them entirely? bunk.
also, backwards compatibility isn't a hardware thing any more. they already removed the chip so it's all now done through software. this doesn't make any sense in the report and doesn't sound accurate.
this whole thing sounds like a game of "telephone" where someone heard a few scraps of information and filled in the blanks on their own.
cheaper PS3? possibly.
this PS3 as described? bunk.
Zero interest in XBox and Halo.
Lemme know when the free PS3s're bein handed out:)
Removing/optimizing a lot of the extra innards of the machine (the bizarre array of memory stick ports, WiFi, Emotion Engine Chip, and cheaper HDD) might bring down cost just enough for Sony for make a $399 system at a significant, but do-able loss.
With predictions from major, reliable developers, the sales of Lair and Heavenly Sword not exactly burning up the charts or persuading people to pick up a system and a generally lackluster Xmas release list, how else is Sony going to drum up sales? I'm personally looking forward to Uncharted, but I'm not fooling myself about how much it will sell. I bet we'll see this just in time for the Xmas shopping season, but will not magically fix Sony's ills due to a lack of games in comparison to the other systems.
Do you sometimes think before writing a rumor that stupid ? Sony has no interest to remove the backward compatibilité as its ALREADY done ! It's software now, so it doesnt cost anything to put it in. And removing the USB Ports ? How do you charge controllers then ? Just be a bit more clever before posting stupid rumors.
