More Analyst Hooey: 80GB Price Drop By Holidays?

Analysts have it rough. I guess. Predicting the future seems like an iffy task, and while statistics isn't my strong point and I dropped Econ the day we learned about opportunity cost, I'm pretty sure numbers don't make predictions foolproof. That said, there's nothing like a favorable analysis to brighten my day: analysts at Wedbush Morgan and simExchange seem to agree that the 80GB PS3 might see its price drop to $499 after all.
Said simExchange's Jesse Divnich:
"...after examining more closely the hardware sales of the PS3 over the last 6 months we have come to the conclusion that the PS3 cannot remain competitive in the current North American environment at its current retail offering at $499 and $599 ... To remain competitive against the other consoles, the Sony PS3 would have to reduce its 80GB SKU by $100 down to $499. Other options, besides a price drop, could be the bundling of more free software titles, which has always been a popular option during the Holiday season."
It's definitely fair to claim that the PS3 needs better pricing to stay competitive - for the moment. As the system improves and grows, that may become less true, but never untrue. The 360 is too much of a "total package" console - as long as it's considerably less expensive than the PS3, it's going to be the favored purchase for those who own neither console.
Considering the mess made by the recent 60GB price-drop-and-discontinuation snafu, Sony could regain some good will by making good on the original price drop we all thought we had for a day or so. But is such a move even financially possible for Sony?

Snafu? I got a ps3 for 350! what!
...and how is the 360 a "total package console" if it doesn't come with wireless internet connectivity...
and breaks 1/3 of the time...
i'm just saying.
