Rumorama: $400 40GB PS3? With Spider-Man 3 Included?

I've got my thumb in the Opposable Pie today, bringing you another hot tip from Ars Technica, who has a Secret Awesome Insider Source with a great track record: having predicted both the 360 HDMI story and the wired 360 Rock Band controller breaks. Now Opposable Thumbs uses their thumbly insight to tell a tale of a double-pronged PS3 price drop that includes a new 40GB model and the potential inclusion of Spider-Man 3 (the film) with one or both models.
Take a look:
- 80GB PlayStation 3: $499.99
- 40GB PlayStation 3: $399.99
- Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray movie pack in with one, or both
- PlayStation 2: $99.99
A 40GB PS3 certainly sounds new, but for $400 it gets competitively close to the upper-tier 360, relatively speaking, and it has enough space to appeal to those of us who aren't quite sure what we'd do with the PS3 hard drive but suspect that 20GB might not be enough.
We'll let you know when we're in Tokyo whether or not Sony makes this rumor the honest-to-gosh truth! Until then - would the PS3-less amongst ye like the proposed holiday price list, or no?

Why does Sony do this? For all they do knocking Microsoft for the multiple SKU's on the 360, they turn around and do the same exact thing?! It's confusing for someone who is in the know in the video game industry. I could just imagine how much of a pain in the ass it is for joe consumer.
Can we tell them both to cut the crap?
I still wouldn't bite...there's nothing in terms of games that interests me at all.
if their model and pricing structure is this confusing to me - someone who is paying attention and somewhat tuned in - i can't imagine what the average consumer or parent must be thinking.
On a side note, I'm loving the Linda Lovelace pic!
