Tales Of The Yellow Dog Intro

This weekend, pitted against my better judgement, I installed Yellow Dog Linux on my PS3. Going into this project, I was really nervous. I don’t have any kind of programming experience or experience with Linux. My past experience with computers began on a Commodore 64, then PC and a few years ago I switched to Mac.
So jumping into Linux was pretty intimidating when I had heard all of the stories from my programmer friends about the unforgiving nature of the OS. When I initially heard about installing Linux on a PS3, I thought ‘Now why would you go and do that?’ Although when I finally got my console I realized the only reason I needed to install Linux on my PS3, is that the system allows it.
Long story short, it was a success. I didn’t brick my console. I didn’t lose any of my games or save states. My media suffered a different fate, but they all live on my main computer, so I just need to transfer them over again.
This week, I am will be going into detail about the installation process to help anyone who is curious about turning their gaming console into a slick little computer on their television.

Looking forward to your article, Toots - have been thinking about installing a bigger HD in my PS3 and installing Linux when I do so (again, just because I can).
Let us know how it all works out!
I'm curious as well - how is DIVX playback? I've heard not that great (since it's really a gimped environment where the Linux system can't touch the hardware directly) - but I'd like the word of someone who seems to have a clue.
I chucked Linux on the shiny beast for the same reason... Just cos I could.
Haven't done anything with is as yet tho, but then I don't really do much with the PS3 in general... I'm hoping thats due to the lack of games and not cos I'm getting old...
