Tales Of The Yellow Dog Pt 1: Back It Up

bigyellow.jpg

Before I realized what I was getting myself into, I installed Yellow Dog Linux on my PS3. I really don’t have any experience programming Unix, or with Linux, but I wanted to see if I could do it and test out the machine as a functional computer. I made the decision a few days ago, so I committed myself to the task of researching the installation process by watching installation videos and reading various Linux forums, such as the Yellow Dog Linux forums for PS3. I quickly learned that the forums and google search bar are your best friends in this process. Get to know them, and know them well. If you are interested in installing Linux on your PS3, I have a little advice that might help you.

Backing Up Your Files From The PS3:
First off, you need to back up your files on the PS3 to a USB device of some sort, be it an iPod, Flash drive, or external hard drive. Back up your information in a couple of ways, so you don’t loose anything in the process.

When backing up your info, first back up your save files. It will hurt in the plums if you erase your game save files, and have to retread through the ones you have been playing for hours, because you didn’t take the time to do this properly.

Go to your save game files on the XMB, and press the triangle button on a file. A menu will pop up to the right with the 'copy' option. Click the X button to accept the copy command, and it will be transferred to your external device. I wiped my iPod for this process, and it worked really well. It takes a little while, but in the end, it’s worth it.

Then go to the System Settings > Backup Data , and backup your data to your external device. Be prepared to lose this step of the process, as I did. For some reason, when I went to restore my backup after I partitioned my hard drive, I was unable. We will get to partitioning the drive later in the process, after we quick format the hard drive.

If you lose any of your media, be prepared to import it again to your PS3. You can re-download any game purchased from the PlayStation Store by going to your download list located on the upper right of the screen. Games are transferred back to your system pretty painlessly.

Now you are prepared for the next step, and the first leap of faith you have to take in the process, quick formatting your hard drive. Join us again later this week for part 2 in this ongoing look at Yellow Dog from a Linux noob.
