Tales Of The Yellow Dog Pt. 2: Quick Format

Welcome back for our step by step process on how to turn your PS3 into a fully functioning Linux box.
Now that you have carefully backed up all of your info as previously stated in Tales of the Yellow Dog pt 1: Back It Up, now you are ready to format your drive.
I would recommend this process for 60GB units or 80GB units, if you have the pint-sized 20GB PS3, consider upgrading your hard drive to make room for the new OS.
In order to install a new OS to your PS3, you have to partition your hard drive. I had no previous experience with this sort of thing, but it was pretty easy. Simply go to the System Settings > Format hard drive option and click X on your controller. You can choose to set aside 10GB to the new OS, or 10GB to the PS3 OS. Click 10GB to the new OS until you feel the need for more space. Hold your breath, and hit the quick format option. Zip, it's done, most of your hard drive has been wiped.
Fortunately formatting your drive does not erase your system settings. I did not have to enter my network passwords or anything.
Now you can put all of your files back where they belong. You can try to restore your backup, but it didn't work for me, so I just placed all of my save files on a USB drive and transferred them back. All of the games that I downloaded from the PlayStation Store, I was able to download again by going to Download List located at the upper right hand side of the screen.
That's all you need to know about formatting your drive for now, join us for the next step: Finding Bootloaders and Yellow Dogs.

Cool - I'm still eagerly awaiting how emulators and media play....
