TGS 07: I Stroke Out To Every Extend Extra Extreme
Stroke out, you filthy pervert. Like an aneurysm!
I sat down with Games For Windows - Live head honcho and former XBLA dood Chris Early at TGS to listen to what was mostly a PR spiel on the success of Xbox Live Arcade. Preachin' to the choir. Handily, I also got a chance to play Every Extend Extra Extreme, the XBLA update of the PSP game by Lumines legendary Tetsuya Mizuguchi. And by play, I mean that I opened up my mind and let Every Extend Extra Extreme dip its PLUR-rave fingers into my brainpan...
If you haven't played EEE on the PSP, nor its homebrewed inspiration, Every Extend, think of the latest iteration as a cross between Geometry Wars and really, really good drugs. Or a "reverse-shooter" with no resemblance to Geometry Wars. It depends which mode you'd like to play - R4 mode, with omnidirectional 2D shooting similar to GW or the straight-up E4 mode, in which your dodge your enemies and pick up time, shield and 'quicken' power-ups (the last flood your screen with enemies) until your shield fails, whereupon you detonate, nuking as many bad guys in your blast radius as possible. They drop bonuses, your shield reforms, and the process begins anew.
All the while infectiously pounding music plays and the controller pulses in time to the beat. The effect is beyond energizing. I quickly entered some kind of zombie fugue state, nodding my head to the music while dominating the board. Early noted, "Wow, I can't even see your guy anymore." Neither could I. I didn't have to. I was one with the machine.
Then he mentioned the third mode, which lets you sync up your own music to the trippy, stoney fun. My brain exploded.

Stroked out...
...you did that on purpose. :)
And nice usage of PLUR!
