Video: PSA Ad Parodies GTA

You know, I'm not sure if I should be entertained or offended by this, as a gamer. On one hand, I think it's brilliant satire of the Grand Theft Auto franchise (though, admittedly, not as funny as that Coke commercial from a while back), but I'm kind of irritated by the fact that someone would actually believe a game could influence kids like the ad implies.

Although it kinda implies that kids are stupid (granted a lot are) I definitely think this is a step in the right direction; encouraging parents to actually communicate with their children rather than ban anything that may be morally offensive.

It's a pretty good commercial as far as these things go. And really it's a pretty good message. Kids shouldn't be playing these games. No, they most likely won't go out and try to copy these retarded things, but these games are for ADULTS, despite what anyone says. So yeah, parents should turn off these games (unless they want to play).

Hmm, then again, rewatching the video the "kids" in the blurry background look pretty old. So that lends a lot less credibility to the commercial.

The anti-drug industry never gets tired of insulting our intelligence, do they?

As responsible gamers, we need to stop clinging to the false idea that "mature" video games can never cause harm to anyone, ever. M-rated games can mess with the heads of children. This doesn't mean games should be censored. But it does mean parents should be involved with their kids and talk to them about the media they watch/play. Don't just lump everyone with a non-positive message about games into some ficticious "anti-gaming" monolith. Be smart.

So now they arent just blaming violence on games, but drugs as well.

Well, why dont we all just blame EVERYTHING on video games? Teen pregnancy: games, Suicide: games, Parental Abuse: games, Airplanes Crashing: games.

Oh and did you know heartattacks and cancer and aids are from games too?

Seriously?

Personally, I have absolutely no doubt that games can influence kids. Honestly, you'd have to be kind of crazy not to. Kids are, largely, remarkably easily influenced. Peer pressure, added to media (movies, TV, games, whatever) that portrays certain things as cool is inevitably going to lead to some kids thinking those things are cool. At least without parental intervention.

What I do have a problem with is people who try to extend that philosophy to place limits on the industry in general or how adults enjoy their games.

The commercial actually seems pretty good to me, pointing out that there's nothing actually wrong with the game ("talk to him about drugs in real life") and that it's up to the mom (i.e. parents in general) to take the responsibility for her kids' behavior. If there's one thing that's borderline annoying it's the end ("This game is over"), but at the same time, that is what we all argue for (more parental responsibility for what their kids are playing) so I can't really even get up in arms about that.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
