40GB PlayStation 3 Spotted In America For $399

The 40GB PlayStation 3 is set for an official release date of October 28, but Target, not one for sticking to street dates, has managed to show that this model is indeed coming to America. Don't believe me? Engadget has the dirty photos to prove it. They also seem to believe the system will be bundled with Spider-Man 3, which is fantastic if you're the kind of person who likes a crappy dessert after a wonderful appetizer and meal.
Before you folks get all hot and bothered by Sony's latest and greatest SKU, remember that this black beauty doesn't have any backwards compatibility at all. Period. If that is important to you, I suggest you either keep your PS2 out (if you have one) or save up for the more expensive models. I'm super happy that I bought my 60GB PS3 in that crazy $150 credit deal before they lost the Emotion Engine. The PS2 is packed up and the PS3 has taken it's rightful place among my consoles. It's just a shame that the only thing I have for it that I believe to be worth a damn is Heavenly Sword. Even that is disappointingly short.
Anyways, with the 40GB model apparently (read: not confirmed) coming to the U.S., are you going to buy one?

Hell no I'm not buying a gimp'd 40 gig. The upscaling on PS2 games is half of why I even want a PS3 right now (it certainly isn't for the amazing game lineup or stellar online play).
I have a 60GB PS3 with the emotion engine and I've used the backwards compatibility.... twice. it's really not that important guys.
Remember back when Sony was going on an on about how 'rumble' wasn't important?
How long before you think they release another SKU with backwards compatibility?
Um, they actually already have 2 SKUs with backwards compatibility if you want it.
Since I enjoy Kingdom Hearts, Sly Cooper, Ratchet & Clank, and Okami, I'm glad for the 60Gb PS3. Of course, I could've kept my PS2 to play them, too.
If you're looking for another game, try Folklore or wait a week for R&CF.
I'll be probably getting the expensive backwards compatible version only if the money turns up. All the games I like on the PS2 are mostly also able to get on the Wii in GameCube format, so I'll have a Wii eventually for older games like that. Plus I plan to get the PS1 downloads for my PSP anyways when the PSP store opens. So I don't need the PS2 compatibility, but if I can afford it I'll get it, because it would be nice.
So I guess I'm mixed on the issue. The price drop is great though for Sony anyways. :)
Speak for yourself Spaz. With the exceptions of Everyday Shooter and Super Stardust HD, I exclusively play PS2 games on my 60gig until actually good PS3 come out.
I was all set to pick up a 360 Arcade until it was revealed that the pack-ins are all trial versions. How tacky.
Anyway, the PS3 wasn't even on my radar before this development and the cut-down version doesn't really entice me either. No PS2 compatibility? How tacky.
So it's a Wii winter for me, I guess. I still have Twilight Princess and Dewy's Adventure to beat, but I just bought a copy of Dance Dance Revolution Mario Mix. Backward compatibility FTW.
