40GB PS3 (Sorta Maybe) Confirmed?

yaycheap.jpg

There has been no shortage of rumors on the possible release of a 40GB PS3 for the holiday seasons. With a near global opinion that the PS3 is overpriced and the need for Sony to get a strong foot hold in the game market it is safe to say that the idea is not unimaginable. Earlier this year Sony had made the move to drop the price of the previous 60GB model while liquidating the stock. Moving to the new single SKU has left us all wondering, is Sony going to finally face the music and release a more affordable unit to the US market?

Today in Engadget a supposed leaked internal memo to Best Buy surfaced. On these documents details of a 40GB model "Spider" are coined as having an MSRP of $399. This attractively priced model has not been confirmed by Sony, nor have these documents been proven authentic. The jury is still out. It is still a good sign for those of us salivating for a way to play some of those juicy upcoming exclusives.

Corroborating internal documents after the jump.

As far as I am concerned, Sony had their chance.

The arrogance that permeates their entire business model in regards to the PS3 and it's launch...turned me off.

I own a Wii and I just recently purchased an XBOX 360. I'm happy with both.

If the PS3 had been priced ANYWHERE near the XBOX 360 when I bought it in mid-September...I'd have given it major consideration.

Instead, Sony opted to play their games...so I'm done with them.

They could lower the price to $299 tomorrow...and I'd probably not buy one out of spite.

Sony lowers their price, people complain.
*rolls eyes*

It is alleged that software backwards compatibility got nerfed in the newer PS3 revision, thats why people are saying that the new 40gb package is utter shite.

at 399 it's actually tempting to get one ...except, of course, for the lack of games to play...*sigh*

oh and if the rumor that there is no backwards compatibility is confirmed...the ps3 will be done for.

I'm sure the backwards compatibility is software. Removing the software would only further alienate their target market and they really wouldn't gain anything from the endeavor. It sounds like fanboy flame mongering.

An affordable PS3 would definitely be in the realm of possibility for purchase, as opposed to the current models which are simply too expensive... no other way about it. However, if the rumor about them completely removing backwards compatibility is true, well then they can pretty much kiss my purchase goodbye... Software emulation for backwards compatibility is bad enough, but if it supports the games I want to play then at least it's tolerable. No backwards compatibility at all is just stupid at this point.
