BAFTA Winners Announced

BAFTA

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts have announced their winners. BioShock deservedly takes home the Best Game of the Year award, but Wii Sports takes home six out of the thirteen available awards. You'll notice it also won the Gameplay award, which, as GamesIndustry points out, is defined as ""the ability of a game to captivate and engage a user's attention and provide a compelling experience."

Crackdown and Okami won two awards. Even God of War II got in on a bit of the action. Here's the full list of awards courtesy of GI.biz:

  • Action and Adventure: Crackdown
  • Strategy and Simulation: Wii Sports
  • Sports: Wii Sports
  • Multiplayer: Wii Sports
  • Casual and Social: Wii Sports
  • Use of Audio: Crackdown
  • Original Score: Okami
  • Technical Achievement: God of War II
  • Artistic Achievement: Okami
  • Gameplay: Wii Sports
  • Innovation: Wii Sports
  • Story and Character: God of War II
  • Game: Bioshock
  • The Gamers' Award: Football Manager 2007 (PC)
  • BAFTA's "Ones to Watch": Ragnarawk

At the end of the evening, Will Wright, creator of The Sims, was awarded a BAFTA fellowship in recognition of more than 20 years' work in the industry.

I could have sworn Okami won some awards from BAFTA last year, I'll have to check later in the day when my wireless isn't being such a pain in the arse. Anyways, there you have it. I'm very pleased to see BioShock get Game of the Year. I'm curious to see if it will get the same award stateside for the Holidays.

Bioshock's a good game and all, but I think that WiiSports should have taken best game. It has easily marked itself as the reason why the Wii should exist and made a cultural impact that will be talked about for years. It opened a door to an audience that none of these other games could serve and widened people's preconceptions of what games can be.

I agree Wii Sports should have taken best game too because of its impact. But I think a lot of core gamers will go up in arms about it.

There's already a lot of noise about the dissastifaction of the nominations, and unfortunately, they do have merit. Some games doesnt even exist yet (ie Crysis) and some games are last years. There arent any rule that it has to be this year though - a great game is still a great game.

Game of the Year: Bioshock

Now I know Bioshock is a great game, and Wii Sports is what it is. But if a game wins all this, you'd think it would also get Game of the Year. I'm not on a Wii Sports platform here, but any game that gets best strategy, sim, sports, casual, social game awards along with best gameplay and most innovative... you'd think that would have an impact on the Best Game category.
