Broken Hearts Club: No Psychonauts 2 Coming

nopsycho2.jpg

Despite rampant internet rumors, Tim Shaffer himself has come out to let gamers know that there are currently no plans for a Psychonauts 2. The rumor, which was started when a banner proclaiming "coming soon" was found on the Double Fine website, spread like wildfire over the interwebs, even igniting a small flame here on GG. But Shafer was quick to step in and stamp out the flambe' when he told Next-GenBiz that no sequel is in the works.

Man, who knew how much excitement a little darkness could bring? The truth is we are just putting together a new page about 'The Excellent Game Psychonauts.' We're not announcing any new games or anything. Sorry if we confused anybody! We lightened up the image to hopefully make things clearer.

A new website... while it's terribly disappointing I can't say it's terribly surprising. Psychonauts was something of a "sleeper" hit that has gained quite a following in the years since it's release, but are publishers willing to take that kind of a risk again? I would like to hope they are seeing as Psychonauts was a wonderfully weird, fantastic, and fun title. Unfortunately, great pieces of art like Psychonauts (yes, I said it) will often go the way of the Dodo to make room for yet another tedious space opera or brown palleted FPS. But at least we can rest easy in the knowledge that as long as Tim Shafer is making games, we can always look forward to something quirky and innovative to help keep our faith in gaming.

I don't know if Psychonauts ever attained a "hit" status any more than it became a cult favorite, trumpeted (and rightly so) as a great bit of storytelling in a drab, cookie-cutter world.
I think it would be tough to expect any studio to fund development of a sequel. Remember that this game delivered some time behind schedule and went through two studios Microsoft dropped it once they thought development was taking too long and commercial prospects for the game were slim (apparently, they knew something there). So I doubt anyone is going to let Schafer take a second whack at the game without some assurances regarding delivery schedule, and that seems very anti-Shafer.
In the meantime, I'm looking forward to Brutal Legend!

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
