Bubble Bobble Sequel Appearing On PSP

bullerainbo.jpg

One of my favorite old-school platforming games is getting an upgrade for the PSP. Rainbow Islands Evolution is being developed by Taito as an update to the original Rainbow Islands arcade game released in 1987.

After the treacherous original adventure Bubble Bobble, brothers Bub and Bob broke the dreaded dragon curse and were restored to their human form. Now with the ability to shoot rainbows and hop on them, the action is similar to Bubble Bobble with vertical levels, although a lot more, 'how should I say?' colorful. Bub and Bob fall "under the shadow of an evil record company who is polluting the ecosystem with a constant, mass-produced musical dirge."

With the ability to shoot and hop on rainbows, it's the closest thing you will see to a pride parade on the PSP, unless you download all of the episodes of Planet Unicorn to your memory stick, and fall into a deep gay coma.

The press release differentiates the remake from the original 2D platformer:

The strict vertical ascents of the original have been expanded and extrapolated into three dimensions, with each level's building-block platforms now following perspective and disappearing into the distance.

I'm not sure exactly how this is going to work, but if it's anyway near as precious as the original, Taito will have my money.

There is the long lost third installment of Bubble Bobble, Parasol Stars for the TG-16, where Bub and Bob have wield parasols to defeat their enemies. The vertical levels where traded out for a horizontal setup. Did anyone have this game, or was it just me?

@ toots, my friend had that and it completely ruled! I thought that the dragons were replaced with kids? My memories of the exact game are fuzzy.

Hey, Hudson, I would buy this game (XBLA/PSN/Wii:VC) in a heartbeat!
