E For All: Hands On Super Smash Bros.

peache4a.jpg

As much as I hate to say it, this was my first real experience with Super Smash Bros. As some what of an oddity where I live, I don't have many gamer friends that I can play party style games with. There was no shortage of people to play with at the conference, however.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl was of course fantastic. It retained most all the gameplay that I would have expected. It provides more control schemes than I could have thought possible for a game console. The friendly Nintendo rep that was escorting was more than eager to inform us that we would be could use any of four different control schemes. Gamecube controllers, Classic Controller, NES style sideways Wiimote and Wiimote + Nunchuck were all viable options. The both of course did not have the wired Gamecube alternative, so Fruit Brute and I of went with the classic controller style.

The controls were very intuitive, and considering this is the third iteration in the series they've had plenty of time to get the scheme right. The system works how you would expect. The only thing that took a while to get used to was grabbing power ups, which was more or less just remembering which button was where.

For the most part the graphics were about what I would expect from a Wii game. It more or less looked like an updated version of Melee. Before anyone goes off on me, I know the Wii isn't really up to snuff with the PS3 or Xbox 360. The graphics were functional and performed well for the system. It didn't feel sluggish and the design was spot on, but it felt slightly dated.

The only real problem I had was it was a demo build. Lots of the characters and levels that I was hoping to see were locked up. I asked the rep if we would be seeing Lucas (Mother 3) in the final release and he more or less just milled around and said maybe. Ultimately this is a game I am definitely going to be buying. It was a blast to play with living people and the online playability just makes the game all the more appealing. And I totally beat Fruit Brute's butt into the ground, Meta Knight for the win!

I thought Lucas was already confirmed on Smash Bros Dojo.

Yeah, I'm confused too.

Asterick, did you mean seeing Lucas playable in a hands-on, pre-release version of the game?

Well, sometimes "characters" make it into the japanese release and not the US. I was more or less asking him if they were seriously going to put it in the US release and he didn't give me a straight answer. :/

Ah. I'm fairly confident they wouldn't have put Lucas on the international Smash Bros. Brawl blog if they didn't intend for him to be in all versions of the game.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
