Indie Games.com Launches
The burgeoning independent gaming scene has been on the radar of mainstream gaming companies, making superstars out of small developers like Jonathan Mak of Everyday Shooter and Jenova Chen of Flow. There has always been an independent gaming scene, but now the gaming industry is really starting to take notice of the visionaries in the field that are influencing the greater industry around them.
Now that the independents have surfaced, many ask ‘What is an Indie game?’ To commemorate the launch of IndieGames.com, they have gathered interviews with some of the most influential independent developers to explain the importance of the Indie movement. The Indie Game Movement feature has interviews with Braid’s Jonathan Blow to Aquaria’s Derek Yu.
Mr. Yu said it best:
"Basically, the indie scene made me love games again! It's where the passion is, it's where the most interesting games are, and it's where the most interesting people are. For the mainstream industry, everything goes in one direction: bigger, shinier, 3D-ier. Indie games go in every direction, and it's exciting as hell. We'll keep 'em honest."
For the Indie initiate, there is a guide to 50 great Indie games that is worth a look, created in collaboration with TIG Source. Many of the games on the list are either free, or very cheap. I would highly recommend Cave Story to anyone who hasn’t played it yet. It’s a beautifully crafted platforming adventure game that is reminiscent of the Metroid-vania style, and best of all, it’s free.

Until these new guys get an RSS feed going and start posting news regularly, I heartily recommend forums.indiegamer.com which has been around for 4 or 5 years and is frequented by many indie game developers.
