Video: Manhunt 2 Puzzles Katie Couric
Earlier tonight, the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric featured a segment exploring Rockstar's impending release, Manhunt 2. I wanted to post the video for all of you who didn't manage to see it. Unless you've been in a coma or on a drinking binge the last few weeks, you're probably aware of the hyper violent game from a few months back when it received an Adults Only rating from the ESRB. Well, it has been edited down to receive a Mature rating and will be hitting US streets tomorrow.
What's that? You don't have four minutes to while away? I think you're lying, but here is the run down:
- Manhunt 2 is awesomely violent.
- There's no scientific link between gaming and violence.
- Nintendo has no problem with Mature titles.
- Parental controls are available on consoles.
- Parents still have to get involved. Imagine that.
At the end of the clip, I love how Katie makes the comment, "And why anyone would want to play that creepy, disturbing game is beyond me." This from the lady who broadcast the inner workings of her colon on national television.

It's Crazy that with such Hard hitting stories like that, Katie Couric and CBS Evening news still can't pull themselves out of the ratings gutter they've found themselves in. utterly shocking lol
But on a serious note, it would have been interesting if that news segment was a little objective. Instead that was the same generic old argument that Violence in Video games equal youth violence. What and loose gun control laws and poor parenting have nothing to do with it God this country is filled with idiots.
It would have been nice if they compared it to the first Manhunt game, because from what I've read in reviews, Manhunt 2 isn't nearly as violent or creepy as the first one.
Does anyone notice how CRAPPY the reviewer is utilizing the WiiMote?
blech; he looks like a retard
What I find amusing about Katie's remark is that reviewers seem to be saying the same exact thing.
See? We gamers do have taste. I'll take felt doggie chew toys with self worth issues and diaries full of elaborate fantasies about action figures over not being able to rip out some random guy's junk any day.
...Wait, what the heck did I just say?
Yeah, the reviewer was totally putting so much motion into the wiimotes just for emphasis.
@Norg:
I'm prone to agree with you, but sadly many retarded folk actually play the Wii with such embarrassing gusto that they look like total morons. Seriously, you just need to slightly jostle the thing, the sensor isn't that complex.
LOL @ Freezair. (I love Chibi Robo!)
Actually as far as video game stories in the news, this one was actually pretty decent. AT LEAST they brought up the fact that video game consoles now have parental controls. And thanks to Nintendo for keeping Manhunt 2 on the console and making the statement that different games are enjoyed by different people...just like movies.
Does the average adult want every movie made to be VeggieTales the movie? No. It goes the same way for games. There is variety so that we can make our own choices. Yes, kids will ALWAYS get a hold of movies/games that are meant for an older audience, that's just the way it is. A parent can't be everywhere at once . . . and they don't need to be.
Normally, I'd be all about this type of article what with how often media horribly portray video games - but this is a Rockstar game, and frankly, they've had more than a couple homophobic moments in their games such that I don't really care how Katie Couric's video-game ineptitude ruffles feathers..
"AT LEAST they brought up the fact that video game consoles now have parental controls"
...and they showed (sorta) how to use them! The big three console makers did everything in their power short of banning M rated games to make sure that that parents have the ability to control what their kid watches/plays. This is something that most game violence related stories totally miss but acts as half of the solution. Nintendo's quote is especially awesome as it recognizes this fact and enables the user to make their own choices (even if none of those can be AO choice).
Of course the other half of the solution would be for parents to act like parents and use these features. "I'm not there to watch them the whole time" and "they can just go to a friend's house to play it" aren't acceptable excuses anymore.
I LOVE BLOOD AND GORE! in video games.
I dont see what the problem is with what Katie Couric said. She would've said the same thing about violent movies, music, artwork, etc.
That was perhaps one of the best TV slots covering Manhunt 2 that I have seen or heard about. Whilst it could have done with a counterpoint selection of non-violent games, it attempted to show the fun in the game, the fact that most people would find it unplayable, the fact that it was aimed at adults, and that parental controls exist. I'd almost say "well done, cbs"!
