No Suprise: Eye Of Judgement Cards Easy To Copy

eoj-scan.jpg

Well, this is kinda an "I told you so moment." A little over a week ago, Tiny and I were discussing various tech and Eye of Judgment came up. I had mentioned that there is nothing stopping people from scanning cards and printing out paper copies to play online. He agreed and we went on our way. Of course, it didn't take long for this prophecy to get fulfilled. Three days after its release, Eye of Judgment already has a bootleg card.

Despite supposedly being printed using special inks rendering photocopying impossible, reports are sprouting up around the interwebs of people successfully copying cards from Eye of Judgment on the PlayStation 3 and scanning them into the game with little or no problem. One of our readers sent pictures of a card he printed out from Penny Arcade, which despite some curling and color differences from the other cards seems to be scanning in just fine. I decided to try it out myself.

I would like to point out that no matter how good the inks are, holographic overlays and what have you, if the game relies on a glorified webcam to scan the picture the cards can be copied. If you notice any of the screenshots from the game, the quality of the picture isn't particularly great either. Simply put it was just a matter of time before this cropped up.

What does this mean? Wizards of the Coast is either going to have to start serializing their rare cards to prevent people from registering cards they don't own for online play, or suck it up an deal with the profit loss. It won't take long before there is a database out there with high-resolution scans of all the various cards. They exist for every other collectible card game under the sun.

Ultimately it won't do too much, the people who play CCGs generally like spending the money. My brother was unemployed and living off potatoes and would still rather spend $5 on a Magic the Gathering booster pack than print off a place-holder for a card he really wanted. I guess it all comes down to this: if you like the game, buy the cards. Just remember there is nothing to stop someone from printing off a take-all-own-all deck and wiping the floor with you.

Well, actually one can't just "wipe the floor" with someone because they've cheated and printed out cards they don't have.

Firstly, you have to register your deck before play, and game rules prohibit you of having too many of certain kinds of cards, making it impossible for you to just load up your deck with impossibly powerful cards.

Secondly, more powerful cards cost increasingly large amounts of Mana, and Mana is hard to come by in the game. You can't just play rare card after rare card, no matter how great your deck is. You'd lose in no time.

So, while it's lame that people would copy cards off the internet to get an unfair advantage, they're not really getting that much of an advantage anyway. And as you mention, the fun of collecting cards is that you find them yourself, not that you print off the entire deck on your Canon printer.

It all ends up being sort of a non-issue.

Spaz is right about cheating, I suppose. But if you print out your own cards, you're getting them for *free* - and I think losing money is probably higher on Sony's list of priorities than fairness in Eye of Judgement...

THAT might be a non-non-issue.

To be fair, it's their own stupid fault for not making them more unique or something. I mean at the very outside they could have given each card a unique serial number you had to register to use. Would have been a pain but there woudln't have been any copying :)

The real headline: WHO CARES!?!?!
I have EOJ, and I play online... what's the diff BT a printed card and a bought card? Nothing other than how you got it. If some one wants to play with ripped cards let them, you wouldn't flame a kid for playing soccer with a kickball, would you.... wait, you prolly would. I wouldn't, just because it's not "an official liscensed by the national soccer league".... awww who cares? I lost my end turn card and my buddy coppied his for me.... so? If you were doing an assignment for school and you went to the library to and copied a page from a book instead of buying the whole dang set of encyclopedias, you must be a cheater and die! Get a life and argue over something important.... like why my avic z2 didn't come with the instruction manual and pioneer won't mail me one, they say just DL and print.... pshaaw, waste my paper and ink?

Well, it's a bit dissapointing to say the least but I like the game and I like collecting so it wont stop me from playing my gf at home lol. They definately should start a registry for the rare cards and have serial numbers for them. They will probably have us send in our originals for new "registered" cards which is the smart move.
